Hello everyone. What is the difference between the DD15 engines with 400 horsepower and 1850 torque and the ones with 505 horsepower and 1850 torque? Is it true that the difference is only in the software and not in the hardware? Can I go to a Freightliner dealer, update the software, and increase the horsepower of a 400-horsepower engine?

The dealer would have to generally pull a parts list on the truck and determine if the components could handle the uprate. This includes the transmission clutch, cooling system, axles and driveshaft. They all have a specific horsepower and torque rating they can handle up to per the manufacturer. Sometimes, depending on the hardware the trucks got, it can come down to just needing parameters changed and other times it involves upgrading driveline components to support the upgrade you're trying to do which is gonna cost $$$$. Depending on what the engine gets uprated to you may have to buy another warranty for it because the higher the engine is rated for the more you'll pay to cover it when something breaks. Not familiar with how Detroit does it.

I would think something like what you're wanting would just be a parameter change and having the ecm flashed. Someone else who's got experience with detroits could give better advice.

Tell me how much power you want and I'll tell you what needs to be done to reach it.

What year is your engine? There used to be a page in the DDDL software with two radio buttons where you could select between two horsepower settings. The feds made them take the option away. It happened to Cummins too. I don't think a dealer can change the horsepower rating of the later engines. I'm not certain about it though. Call a dealership and ask them.
