Hello Everyone,
I’m seeking advice on getting a Class 1 truck driving job in Canada. I already have my Class 1 license and I’m ready to start working. However, I had a DUI nine years ago when I was 18, and I didn’t reinstate my license until 3 years ago I could have done it years prior but never bothered, Since then, I’ve kept a completely clean record with no incidents or tickets. And in the process of getting a pardon also.
While my driving abstract shows the reinstatement date from 2021, the DUI itself was nearly nine years ago. I’m concerned about how this will affect my chances of finding a job. I’m hoping to hear from anyone with experience or advice on how companies might view this situation.
Specifically, I’d like to know:
• How much weight companies place on the time since the DUI versus the reinstatement date.
• What I can do to improve my chances of getting hired despite this history.
I’m committed to proving myself as a responsible and reliable driver and would appreciate any insights you can offer.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I would call a couple companies to find out what they say and that will give you an idea of your chances. Also, just apply and see what they say about it. I don't know about the reinstatement but most companies also list the time since you had and offense.

Where in Canada are you located? Some markets are easier to find a job than others.
Easiest way is to start applying to companies that interest you. Knock on doors and talk to the person doing the hiring, with resume in hand. This gives you a chance to explain your situation.
It's going to come down to the insurance company the company uses, they will have a time frame where they will not insure for certain offenses such as DUI and distracted driving. -
In Ontario, Canada I have a former friend who has massive issues with drinking from 3 dui's and pass weed charges before it was legalized. He ended up passing his CDL licensing in Ontario, Canada and obtained a job where he has been at for the past decade. Only thing is he can't and will never be able to cross the border into America because it's considered a Criminal Record. On the American side I'm sure it goes the same way even with a pardon, when traveling to another country it's up to that country customs border control to let you in and they can refuse you regardless of what's on the pardon piece of paper. Yes, people make mistakes but for the majority most are unable to cross borders. However, I'm not sure before 1980's because there was a driver from Newfoundland who told me that back then he was able to back in th 70's but after the 1980's things changed so I'm not sure about those times.
Regarding a job, there are some companies who will take a chance on you believe it or not.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Plus, crossing borders is not that important. There is plenty to keep you busy in a single country.
