Advice on Getting a Class 1 Trucking Job with a Past DUI (Canada)

Sadly, border crossing has become a hassle. Thirty + years ago, I crossed the border multiple times a week, almost always with a pre-cleared load, and rarely exceeded 15 minutes clearing except for the rare occasions of:
1) Getting a visual check on my load (more often on the US side than the Canadian side)
2) Having to get some crucial piece of paperwork from a broker (usually on the Canadian side, most often at Ft. Erie, ON)
3) Traffic backup, or
4) Slowdowns due to a Customs Canada strike
Today, there are slowdowns due to visual checks before crossing bridges, and customs takes their own sweet time anymore. A lot of larger carriers hire hourly shunt drivers to pick up from a lot on one side, clear the load, then park it at a lot on the other side. The Canadian border is almost as much of a hassle as the Mexican border anymore.

 

I am sure you have, and so have we, if the crime is serious enough. (Murder, Pedophilia, Rapist, Violent Offender, Etc.)
We are talking DUI here though.

 

Honestly for a commercial driver, I think a dui is worse than the others you listed.

 

25 years trucking and i've never been asked for a criminal check.. even when hauling for fedex or canada post

 

thats odd, its pretty much an industry standard. And alot of companies are now doing them as a part of return to work policy for drivers who go on extended vacations

 

Considering a DUI affects your bondability as a driver... so, yea.

 

No it doesn't.
Theft and other crimes related to theft does.

 

You are correct in other careers and jobs such as an office worker or dock worker. But as a professional driver on public roadways, it 100% discredits your bondability. In Canada, it is never removed from your record until you seek a pardon which has a 3,5, or 10 year waitg time depending on how the courts handled your DUI. In the States, it stays on for 10 years.

 

I don't want to argue with you.
I know that this does not affect the ability to be bonded as a driver unless, possibly armored car or the like. Being bondable means an employer’s insurance will cover you in positions of trust, such as handling money or sensitive information. I personally know many drivers with DUI in their history.
In Canada, DUI is a criminal offense. In the US it is a misdemeanor.

 

There are many types of ''bonds''.
EG, A load in bond and a T n E bond or a carriers bond and more.
