The Spruce Goose had 8 engines. Quite a plane, even if it only flew once

The Spruce Goose originally had military applications in mind but it was rendered obsolete with the end of the Second World War.
Flying boats and amphibians still have a niche to fill to this day and it’s been demonstrated quite a few times.
This is one of my personal favorites. A modern day “PBY Catalina”,if you will!

I saw it back in 1985 when it was still on display with the Queen Mary.

It was still there when I saw it back around 1991.
From my understanding it was moved to McMinnville,Oregon in 1992 to the Evergreen Aviation Space Museum, where it sits to this day.

unfortunately, even though my job would take me out that way a few times, i never got to see either the ship or the plane. it just wasn't feasible at that time for me, and that's all she wrote.

i only got to see the airplane in the movie, Aviator, with Leo DiCaprio.

Howard had visions, maybe far fetched for his time, but at least he built it the plane, and his empire.

If anybody gets the chance to go through Evergreen's museum it's well worth the trip. Plan on spending the whole day, there's a lot to see.

I’m surprised that Evergreen didn’t save one of their 747 freighters for the museum before the company ceased operations. One of the them was actually a movie star!

Sadly the 747 that was used in the movie was scrapped.
