20171018_153307.jpg The plan today was to remove and replace purge valve and cartridge on my air dryer. 2014 Pete 587. Tried getting the cartridge off for a couple hours and threw in the towel. Didn't even try the purge valve. Any tips on getting the sob off? I have the strap type oil filter removal tool and couldn't not get the thing to budge... Took a hammer and taped around the edges and still got nothing... The location is under the truck... PITA

They can be stuck good. My tool of choice for a stuck cartridge on the air dryer is a chain wrench used at the base of the filter. Unlike a strap the chain wrench wont stretch and gives plenty of bite to the filter with no slip. The metal type bands will even bend and break when they are stuck good. Lube the new filter seal with silicone grease before installing so it will easily come off next year and don't over-tighten it. Otherwise if its fighting you that bad and it needs a purge valve, just bite the bullet and get a new dryer, governor and all.

This is similar to what I use- works awesome.

You may need to cut off the filter right above the filter metal edge.

Then you can go in there with a wrench or pliers to unscrew it from the drier.

    Do NOT cut the cartridge.

Big strong long screwdriver, philipshead if possible but flathead will work too.
About 2 inches from the top off the cartridge, ram it in with a hammer all the way thru.
    Then apply force.

I just did my AD-9, but I find it faster and easier to just change out the whole air dryer with a rebuilt one.
Cost about $70 for a cartridge plus takes an hour longer to change. Vs $200 for a whole new rebuilt dryer with cartridge already installed, new heater and purge valve included.

This dryer ADIS cartridge is to be had for around the 35 to 40 dollar range , however the complete dryer is a bit pricier than 200. The dryer in the photo appears to have never been serviced, which is a shame. When the moisture builds inside and the corossion sets in where the cartridge threads on they can be frozen really good. Up here in the rust belt I have either had them stuck so good that they dont come off, or the cartridge takes the threads off the spud on the way off. Don't give up though it may come right off with some grunt.

AD9 has an internal cartridge and the dryer must be taken apart. From memory.

I have never seen one with a internal cartridge.
    Live and learn.

With a new/young compressor i change the cartridge just before fall.
As the compressor ages i switch to 2 times a year.
A cartridge is cheaper then airvalves.

This style. First you have to take it off the truck, take all those bolts off, inside is the spin on cartridge.
