Truck was diagnosed with a fan clutch going bad about 2 weeks ago. Only symptom was leaking excessive air when unit is shut off. Two days ago I pre tripped and found the res about a gallon short. I filled and drove from Savannah to orlando and shortly after I shutdown I looked and found the coolant had leaked but not a lot. I checked later that night and again it had leaked some more to about a gallon again. Since then it hasn’t leaked at all. I did some research and found that a bad clutch can affect the fluid by it burning off due to faulty fan. Trucks not running hot and the temp gauge seems about normal. Has anyone had coolant loss in the early stages of a faulty clutch? All replies are appreciated.

I assume from your peofile picture its a pete? If so and its a paccar MX motor. check behind the engine and in the top left about half way back first. There are a couple of plastic coolant fittings going into the motor. Those #### fittings are absolutely natorious for cracking or the paper gasket failing and allowing coolant to seep out around them. I had to replace all 4 on my rig and i highly recomend you use the aftermarket brass fittings. The #### oem plastic ones are garbage.

Don't know how a faulty fan clutch could ever equate to an engine burning coolant unless someone wasn't paying attention and let it overheat enough to damage the engine.

My money is on this being a seperate and unrelated issue.

I know on the 579 Pete’s we have radiators like to leak as well as the expansion tanks and heater cores. Should be able to find said coolant by following the pink fluid

From experince with my old truck, i agree. hence my recomendations to check those fittings. When they started going in the 579 i had exactly the same symptoms. It would dump about a gallon of coolant or so over a day and did it for about a week before the fitting fully broke off or blew out.

And from what ive experinced and heard about 90% of the time its that or the waterpump. However, it may also be the cooling line running to the emissions system. If i were him id check those spots and if they arent leaking get down under it and check up around the doser area or directly behind the emissions system where the lines feed in. Thats another spot absolutely natorious for going bad. Had it happen a good 4 times on mine over the 600k miles i put on.

This is of course assuming he he running an MX13. If its an cummins or glider it will depend on the motor but id still check for leaks at the back and around the emissions system.

I had a strange one with my 2023 389 Cummins.

Was losing a good amount..maybe a quart per day. One day I shut down and was doing a post trip inspection. Engine off I saw it burp out coolant from the lower radiator hose. Just dumped coolant on the ground and then stopped..no drip.

Turned out the clamps just needed tightening.

Besides the radiator leaking at around 150k miles that’s all I can add. Obviously if your radiator was leaking you’ll know.

Has about 680k. The clutch hasn’t been replaced plus as I said a mechanic just so happen pointed out the excessive air when shutting the unit down. No increase in oil. Dont think it’s mixing with fuel. Saw nothing using search.

Screw clamps will let go after a while .
Thats why the shops use the $15.00 clamps

Cold water leak is what term my mechanic uses.
