I have a 97 kenworth t800 with n14 celect plus . Usually my volt gauge will read around 14v when engine running. Recently it has dropped to 12v and will go below that if I turn on headlights. I was thinking of replacing alternator. The 400$ option is a 160 amp Delco . The 250$ option is a 170 amp alternator I forgot the brand it says it can’t be used with DIODE TYPE BATTERY ISOLATERS. Am I alright to use the lower cost alternator?

Oxbow, Rideandrepair and The_vett Thank this.

I would confirm that the voltage at the B+ terminal on the alternator is low.
Other things can cause the same symptoms.Oxbow, Rideandrepair and BoxCarKidd Thank this. -
Yeah I thought I’d buy the cheaper alternator and rebuild the old one . That way I’d have a spare . But as far as the diode isolators ?? I don’t need to worry about that ?

How about do some troubleshooting first before loading up the parts cannon?
201, little cat 500 and beastr123 Thank this. -
I had a truck that did the same thing. It ended up being a loose connection on the alternator, (positive charging cable).

Yeah I hear you about the parts . But I was planning on keeping a spare alternator in the truck

Make sure all your cables are in good shape, and connections are clean and tight, does this first before throwing parts at it.
