Can anyone tell me what genius thought cables for grounds, and positive terminals should be made of aluminum, or was that just a ploy to save a bunch of coin on the new cascadias. And I'd bet all new Freightliner trucks.
Aluminum ground cables?

I do not know his name but he was previously employed in the mobile home industry. That is why many of them burned up years ago. It was ran all the way to the recepticals. That is not allowed by code now.
Something else to look forward to.misterG, 86scotty, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
Aluminum conducts electricity much better than copper and is lighter.
The majority if not all of the power grid is aluminum cable.
Aluminum wiring in residential and commercial construction in the 60's and 70's was far more common than copper but there were corrosion issues where the aluminum meets the steel connectors so that's why you don't see it in residential construction today.
The corrosion led to fire hazards.
As far as your truck goes I see no problem with aluminum as long as it's not married to a steel part.
Are you having issues with it?
If so I'd like to hear what they are.Last edited: Aug 23, 2019

I don't know yet it's a new Cascadia still. But driving a salt belt truck with aluminum cables seems like a real big issue waiting to happen. And no aluminum does not conduct as well as copper. Aluminum conducts current 61 percent as good, compared to copper. Yet is 30 percent the weight of copper. According to Google.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Rideandrepair Thanks this.

I’ve noticed aluminum battery cables on my cars, 08 and 09 GMs. Mobile homes, till 1976. A house down the street, burned last year, aluminum wiring. I’m rewriring my overloaded 14 ga.. copper, with 12 ga. How it ever passed inspection is beyond me. There is a special grease, used for aluminum supply lines, when installing to fuse box. You might want to use some of that, to fight corrosion.
Intothesunset Thanks this. -
As long as its sized correctly you've got no problem.

Truck manufacturers test everything to find out how long parts last. If the cables last forever then they get rejected and sent back to the test lab to find out how to make them fail in a few yearsmhyn and Intothesunset Thank this.
