I am hoping to get into trucking after 10 years as a professional firefighter/paramedic and am looking at schools/companies close to the Daytona, Fl area. Talked to Dave the other day and think they have a good program, just wondering if I should wait until Jan for the next class or hire on with a carrier that does their own training. I have 10 years CDL B driving firetrucks in heavy urban(DC) and rural environments and will have CDL A learners with combo, tanker and Hazmat endorsements this week. Advice? Getting OTR experience and working now is top priority and family can handle me being away 2-3 weeks or longer if necessary. Thanks and Stay Safe.

Why if you have a career now paying x Would you want to pay for training and start at the bottom of the food chain?

I got off the truck last year and moved to Fl for my wife's health. After multiple cancers, her body can't take the cold Mid-Atlantic winters and Florida has been good for her. I was kinda burned out on death and tired of worrying about bringing illnesses home with me( there's alot of nasty stuff out there and MRSA almost killed me in 2007. So I can eat starting over, I'm a fast learner, a confident professional behind the wheel, and after 4 years as a Ghetto Fireman, seen enough bad stuff and dealt with so many "dynamic" situations and so many 24+ hour work days to handle the road. I'm just not the office type I guess, and although I will miss being home every night, the money is good, the work is honest and I think there are more than a few men and women out there on the road willing to help me along. And when I am able, will gladly use my skills and training to help them.
