Hello,
Currently working at JB Hunt out of a dedicated account here in SoCal. Been with the company for 3 years and at Schneider for a year before that, so been a trucker for 4 years now. I've got all the endorsements ("X" endorsement on my DL). I figure I have enough experience to start looking at some better companies, and from what I've been reading anecdotally, Old Dominion seems like one of them. From what I see they have at least two terminals close to me.
I worked intermodal with Schneider for my one year that I spent there, and did two years at the ports with JBH until they lost the contract with the customer we were serving. Currently doing reefer delivering groceries and produce to markets around SoCal. I'm fairly happy here, but I know there's better out there.
Was wondering if there's anyone here that works there doing "local" Linehaul or P&D that can describe what a typical day is like and share their thoughts and experiences before I decide to apply.
Anyone work for OD out of SoCal?

Let’s us know if you find anyone that is hiring. From what I’ve seen, no one is and the ones that are, the pay isn’t great. Incase you haven’t noticed, we are in a recession but the Democracks are keeping it hush due to an election year.
Makoman Thanks this. -
The main things I dislike is that the culture there feels a little too corporate sometimes and I feel like I'm never going to make more money working for them than what I am now. Does that make sense? Reefer work isn't bad. I feel that it's pretty recession proof. People will always need to eat. While other local DCS accounts in my area have shed drivers and shrunk, the ones they have that handle food are holding steady, and at least a couple of them, Aldi and El Super are looking for drivers. I belive Smart & Final (owned by the same parent company as El Super) is as well.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
Depends on the terminal. Which one are you looking at, Orange or Carson?

That one is posted as mileage, but the low man on the linehaul board can mean anything. Within the SoCal network we have hourly and mileage depending on the length of run. I’m not sure where a Carson mileage driver would go. Maybe Kettleman City or Desert Center. Hourly runs would just be to Irwindale or Rialto and back a few times most likely. Maybe a San Diego or something in there once in awhile. It’s all going to be nights. Even if they have a day run, you won’t have the seniority to get it.
If you’re “deciding to apply” it might already be too late. I’m in a much smaller driver market than Carson, and there were about 100 applicants to the spot I landed.
Because you’ve been at Schneider and JB Hunt I’m assuming you have an E restriction. If that’s the case it’s a long shot. We just hired a P&D combo driver with that restriction (combo at my terminal actually covers linehaul too), and I’m not sure how they swung that, but he drove with a “trainer” for 50 hours or so, and got to schedule a road-test bobtail at the DMV with the 10-speed to get his restriction removed. I’m assuming it’s solely terminal manager discretion.
I’m not sure what you’re referring to about “culture”. You’ve been with two mega carriers. It doesn’t get more corporate than that! Linehaul nights in SoCal are super chill. Everyone is run out of central dispatch in Rialto. If you’re self sufficient and don’t need your hand held, you’ll be fine. Those guys get annoyed when drivers are needy. It’s really not a hard job. The Cortex tablet tells you everything you need to know.
As far as pay, I’ve been here almost 18 months and landed at just over $107K my first full year. That was with a few extra shifts here and there. Some weeknights are slow, but a 6th shift is almost always an option.
I’ve seen one driver fired since I’ve been here, and that was at our “sister” terminal. The dude couldn’t follow the most basic instructions. I was surprised they gave him as many chances as they did because his screw-ups were galactically stupid. -
Thank you for the reply. I looked at the ad again and saw the "PM" in the posting. Not thrilled with that, but not necessarily a deal breaker. Definitely leaning Linehaul over P&D.
Fortunately, no "E" restriction. Put myself through CDL school so I wouldn't have to be beholden to some company for a year. I learned on an 8 and 10 speed. My first truck at JBH was a 10 speed, though I only got to drive it for about 2 months as they were on the tail end of phasing out all of their manuals. I'd probably be rusty, but I'm sure after a few weeks I'd be used to it again.
Is OD a union company? Not a deal breaker either, just sounds like It from how you describe the way they are structured. Also, did you have to do any dock work starting out? -
Only combo guys do dock work. Linehaul is all drop and hook, but most of the Carson runs will be doubles I would assume, so it can be slightly annoying building a set if you’re at one of the hubs while it’s busy.
I’m pretty sure the only union LTL’s are ABF and TForce.Makoman Thanks this. -
Walmart in Apple Valley might be hiring. That's job security, very easy work no hurry up or rushing, and a sure $100K+ every year.
Makoman Thanks this. -
Also, Walmart rotation is usually 5/2, 5/3 when you start. It’s not a bad gig, but it’s regional. Definitely not home daily.
Apple Valley hasn’t had an opening posted in at least a year.
