I am going OTR with a buddy as a team at the beginning of August when his CRST contract is up. (lol CRST) We've made a decision several times on what company to go with or whether we would go to Texas and try the oilfields or and have changed our minds many times. We had finally decided on Schneider for tanker exp. However, I had Con-way in my head for some reason and started researching. I talked to recruiters from both places and have researched through forums and drivers and feel pretty comfortable finally deciding to go with Con-way. I can't really find anything negative that gets said about Con-way at all which makes me very happy. But I thought I'd ask one good time: Con-way drivers, is there anything negative you have to say about Con-way?

Obviously you haven't met Surfer Joe. When I was there they required hazmat and passport as you were forced dispatch lower 48 and Canada. I went to Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. Had a preplan for British Columbia that fell through. Don't know whether they do the other provinces or not. Ran almost all the 48 with them also. They do have some long freight and have a lot of teams. Been 2+ years since I left. Things may have changed.

I don't understand though. What's wrong with going to Canada? Does it suck? And I would expect to run the whole 48 as on over the road trucker. I don't see what's wrong with it. Enlighten me?

Can you read French? There is more to crossing national borders than state borders. Potential inspections, paperwork, customs, currency issues, phone and data charges that can floor you if you don't have the right plan, ect........customers that don't bother trying to d-ice their lots in the winter. Winter road conditions a bit different. Long waits on paperwork delays if things aren't right. And Canadians, Americans, and the French aren't quite as friendly as you may expect.

Above can be true .... But I've been in and out 10+ times ....never any issues

if you run a GPS with CA included you should have too many issues in Quebec , but when I ran team we only went to Canada twice ... Once to BC (long run ) and once to Quebec ....

Ask & you shall receive... I'm sure Surfer Joe will be by here soon to tell u how bad we are!

The money isn't worth the hassle and BS that comes with going in and coming out of Canada. Getting in isn't as bad as getting back out. Plus they have special rules as to what you can have on your truck, no weapons, no adult movies or mags, no more than 2 cartons of cigarettes so on and so forth just to name a couple. Freight forwarding at the border is as close as I will get to crossing but luckily there's no where near the flatbed freight going in and out like there is dry van and reefer.

Well every once in a while I guess I can bend over for the border. As long as it isn't all the time like a regular thing I guess it's just one of those things.

After looking in to this surfer joe you speak of I see that he is solo. I've already accepted the fact that if you want bank you have to go team lol. So if a team driver posted low pay checks like that it would concern me

the Taylor terminal in Michigan provides lockers for you dirt man porn and three inch knifes ...I hope you don't carry a gun ... Against most company policy and will get your ### thrown in jail at the border

all Conway Truckload paper work is done via "ACE" so your pre-approved after you fax the BOL's to Taylor .... Alot of shipper will do for you when you pick up so you just have to stop at a truck stop ( quite a few flyin J & pilots are in Ontario ) or I've faxed from the fifth wheel truck stops for a cheap as a $1 ca

basically you need to give the US customs officer straight answers to his questions ...some times you might have to get X-rayed if you come back empty ( looking for drugs most Likley ) and pay the $10.75 customs fee ( rarely do the waive it ...but I didn't pay it once , lucky me! )

never had a problem with ciggs ... Alway buy two cartons duty free before going in and just declare them at us customs

    I love doing Canada.

Just go by zip codes on your GPS up there and it'll work better. I know a little French and you pick up what you need quickly

    Ferme la bouche
    Means shut your mouth
So I a weigh station says ferme....its closed
    Quest is west.

Not a big deal unless you are lazy.

I make fun of the guys that don't run up there or have hazmat. (You'll never have to take the ferry we just route through rockport....sooooo super extra miles)

    Nowwwww....

    Pros working Conway:

    Banked days off
    Paid @ dispatch
Inverters installed already(unless you get a red truck like I did)
Freight yards to drop trl and go do whatever you please.<<<this is very nice
    Left alone.
Idle as you please (well I do)

    Cons:
    Unpaid "locals"
    ^
This will piss you the hell off.
    Kc
    Laredo
    Chicago
    Houston
    Charlotte
    Dfw
    San Antonio.
Are my frequents on this....and this could take your entire day for ethier nothing or 1 paid mile.

Long hold times and road service response (you'll learn how to become a ta service level mech quickly out of anger)
    Poor load information and directions.
Not much room for pay advancement.

There's more... But I'll just let you figure that out ;)

    paul_4lp and JOHNQPUBLIC Thank this.
