Just before 2 pm, an appliance bobtail truck was northbound on Valley Ranch Parkway at SH 99 in New Caney. The driver ran the red light and was struck by a Grocers Supply 18-wheeler that was westbound on the SH 99 feeder about to enter the freeway. The impact flipped the appliance truck, ejecting appliances onto the ground. The 18-wheeler ran off the road, went between two traffic signs, and into the Valley Ranch Retention pond. The cab of the truck immediately sank. The driver of the 18-wheeler was able to kick out the front windshield and swim to shore. In the process, he cut his wrist but escaped any other injury. The driver of the appliance truck was not injured. The westbound feeder was closed, causing motorists to have to U-turn at Valley Ranch Parkway and go back to I-69. Saddle Creek Towing removed the 18-wheeler from the pond. Miller Wrecker had to flip the appliance truck back onto its wheels to remove it. With fluids in the water, TXDOT notified the U. S. Coast Guard as the pond flows into a waterway. Unlike the appliance truck, which was loaded with appliances, the Grocers Supply truck was empty.
