Living with a complete strange who may or may not murder me in my sleep doesn't sound like a fun prospect. If in the end it's required, then I'll do it, but I'm just wondering if y'all know of any companies that don't require new drivers to go out with trainers?
Are there companies where I don't have to live with a trainer?

what you can do to calm your nervousness, is this
1) wear a bullet proof vest.
2) wear a spiked collar to protect your throat
3) take along a watch dog, just not your mother-in-law
4) pay up in full or at least, get life insurance
5) kill him first. -
I can't see any company today hiring someone with ZERO trucking history/experience and putting them into a truck by themselves and wishing them good luck. But their are different trainee/trainer methods out there, some are longer then others, for better or for worse. If/when you get your CDL and get out in the real world, you'll want someone there in the beginning for advice and help, even if it means living in a sardine can with them for 4-6 weeks.
I might say it's a roll of the dice what sort of experience you will have before it's all said and done, but others might say the trainee experience is typically not bad. I suspect a lot of it depends on what sort of expectations you have going in. But consider it an initiation or like a college hazing ... or a right of passage. -
To calm your nerves, read the thread about that werner trainer.

10 or 11 days with a trainer if you start with Watkins-Shepard or TransAm.
They've had this policy for decades and the world hasn't come to an end yet.Lucy in the Sky, KriegHund and Riffman Thank this. -
Trainers are like snakes--they're more afraid of you than you are of them.

Some companies put you in a hotel every night while training on the road. You're still with your trainer in the truck all day, but at least you'll have 10 hours to yourself everyday.

Schneider is 4-6 days with a trainer on the road. You'll be sharing a room in the "hotel" with a stranger for the week before and week after that though. One of the main reasons I went with them. Couldn't stand the idea of months.
Hotel gets quotes because it's a dump and should be condemned. But it's got a functional toilet and a shower.. And you might get lucky with roommates leaving or getting kicked out. My first week roommate was doing IC training and was gone on Thursday. Third week roommate quit after day 1.. Something about horrible lies from recruiters about dedicated.mindes Thanks this. -
