Argentine farmers man roadblocks as tensions flare

BUENOS AIRES, March 20 (Reuters) - Argentine farmers threw up roadblock protests on Friday, a day after Congress failed to vote on a proposal to lower the soy export taxes that have fueled a bitter year-long dispute with the government.
Protesters blocked a major highway for hours in the eastern province of Entre Rios, further dimming hopes for any quick resolution to the conflict.
The renewed tensions drove up U.S. soy futures and local livestock prices.
The farmers were angered by ruling party lawmakers' refusal on Thursday to vote on an opposition bill to cut the taxes and an announcement by President Cristina Fernandez that revenue from the levies would be shared with provincial governments.

Truckers Clash With Road-Blocking Farmers in Argentina

BUENOS AIRES Truckers and road-blocking farmers clashed on Monday, the third day of a strike staged by Argentine agricultural unions to protest export taxes on soy.

The impact of the job action also was felt at the Buenos Aires livestock market, where the number of arriving cattle was down by more than 90 percent from the usual Monday total of 3,000 head, industry sources said.

The strike included demonstrations at some 50 points nationwide and, while in most cases farmers picketed on roadsides, in some cases traffic was blocked completely.

On a road linking Argentina to Brazil and Uruguay, clashes broke out Monday morning between farmers blocking passage to the outskirts of the city of Gualeguaychu 190 kilometers (120 miles) northwest of Buenos Aires and truckers trying to cover their routes.
