What is the best accounting software for small truck fleet companies? Account receivables, Account payable, net profit, asset liability. People who own 20 trucks or less, what software you use for accounting?

Depends on what you're trying to do with the software. If all you want to do is track your revenue and expenses and send out invoices, QuickBooks would fit your needs. If you want to track revenue and expenses specific to trucks along with load info, then you're looking for something more complex like mystic from nastc, or truckin pro from fog line software. Then there are more customizable options that are free but require a bit of time to get set up.

It all goes back to your specific needs and what data you're trying to capture.

In my opinion, I don't think QuickBooks is worth the money for what it doesn't do. You can't track in a searchable database the shippers in an area and what broker you got that load from. All you can do is invoice the broker as the client and right in the notes or as a line item the shipper and consignee information.

There are a lot of things you can do in it once you get it setup.

You can search for shippers and consignees just the same, I can tell you almost everything you want to know about the company, driver, truck.

The trick is with quickbooks is to hire someone to do all the work for you, program it as you need to. Those other packages suck, I've tried all of them and still got a couple to try out. I can't see anything else to use at this point.

What version of Quickbooks are you using? Is it online version (I am guessing not seeing as how you said someone set it up for you)

You're telling me you can enter a new invoice for a regular broker that you use and then also include on the invoice the shipper and the receiver. After all of that is said and done you can then do a search in Quickbooks for say, a shipper in the state of OH?

How big of an operation do you run? For a single truck or a less than 20 truck operation for that matter, what you are talking about is a huge investment in money, just from what I know about Quickbooks overpriced community. For the basic off the shelf single copy version, doing all of that isn't doable.

You are correct in that you can track expenses by truck. Just kind of a pain in the butt. I also agree that the other programs I have mentioned suck completely! I looked at Mystic and laughed when they asked for $500 just to set up the company plus $40/month per truck, plus all the other "Extras" just to make it valuable. Don't get me started on the Truckin Pro software. I get it was "designed" by a truck driver in the industry, but it sucks. It's not really a full fledged accounting software, which is what I want for running my business.

I have spent the last 2 years modifying and redesigning a piece of opensource accounting software that is more powerful than quickbooks and very customizable. I am working on my final tweaks now before I try and offer it to other drivers for use. The software is web based, so having a server to host it on is required or you can do a local install on a computer if a simulated server set up :)

I just got frustrated with the options that are out here for our industry and decided to create something for myself. Like I said I'll end up offering it to other drivers to use once I finish tweaking some minor things. I am also undergoing a complete redo of my financials now that I have this software set up. It's amazing how much you learn about bookkeeping over a couple years and realize what you didn't really know when you start :)

My only suggestion to anyone that is looking for an accounting option, really need to look long and hard at what you need and what the software offers. Just know that a lot of times once you pick something it's a pain in the butt to switch systems later on.

I still believe Fogline Software is the best trucking software out there. Plus if there is something special you need, all you have to do is ask them and they will come up with the solution.

    Letsgetreal Thanks this.
