I'd try Yellow as a first choice.
Yellow has about 5 terminals in Florida alone.

Mondelez International in Florida, at one time, ran ads with a program to train CDL-B drivers to acquire a CDL-A.
Don't know if the company still has that program or not. Check it out if you're interested in something more local.

Ahhh....don't scare the guy. Most drivers never see NYC in their whole career. Plenty of drivers around that want to go there and the dispatchers know who they are.
I only went there 4 times in my whole career; 1 flatbed load and 3 refrigerated loads.
Usually drivers from NYC want to go there because they're from there.
