So I got a job offer from a quarry to haul gravel and asphalt for them since my other local gig is going under. (Been hauling wood chips o/o for 6 years.) I’m totally green on dump truck work, but the hourly rate seems feasible to me. He asked if I would mind hauling asphalt, I reply I want to do anything to stay busy since I know it’s seasonal. What’s the best all around dump truck setup to get? He says tri axle is what they all run.

I have a couple friends who each own a fleet of dumps. A lot of their work is interstate road jobs hauling gravel, dirt, busted concrete.
They run twin screw trucks with a lift axle, seems to do everything they need. Not saying that’s the case for you, but it should do what you would need…. -

This is what I’m assuming he means by a tri axle. Maybe this is considered a tandem with a lift axle. I admit I’m not up to date on dump truck terminology.

Mack has a fantastic reputation in the dump truck industry for producing a sturdy truck. As far as the bed it kind of depends on what you will be hauling. A steel bed will be able to take a lot of abuse if you’re going to be hauling tear out and rip-rap, but is going to be heavy. An aluminum bed will weigh less, and would be perfect for rock sand and asphalt. Also, if you’re going to be asphalting, buy stock in mudflaps. They like to get chewed up by the buggy. @REO6205 is my go to for anything dump truck related. He’s always got great advice. Best of luck!

Asphalt pays well. FYI, the pic you posted is a good set-up, 20K lb steer axle rating 34k on the tandems and not sure of the tag axle.
