That route up from Durango can be extreme in the fall winter times, If you do not mind 2 lane mountain pass with a few hundred feet drop it is scenic as best you get, but going down that grade to Ouray you have to go through a avalanche tunnel that also shields you from the rocks that come down sometimes, If storming I would do the old 666 route up(guess it is 461 now) and head for Grand Junction and slip down the valley. Watch the weather, it can dump down there.

really liked taking that road when it was 666 and watching some people being scared for just a number, then they changed the # and it is just another road...like always.

Your best bet is to contact Colorado DOT for the live update on that particular mountain road. We are going into winter and some roads are absolutely closed no ifs buts or maybes. Maybe not that one tonight but some other night it will be.

I recall a thread last winter here where a trucker discussed crossing via I-84 Dalles from Washington State and one of the major US Routes in the mountain highlands. We made use of existing DOT cameras in real time to determine the level of pavement, snow accumulation and so on, there was a pending ice storm coming to the Dalles at that evening he was passing through.

He was successful beyond reason using his chosen route instead of Seattle then 5 south or Dalles into Portland then 5 south. He did however come within 2 hours of being iced in at the Dalles by the columbia river crossing after he dropped down to get across using online information to be updated.

I tell you this much, if there was a net in my time it might have decided if sherman hill was open in Wyoming or not. there is a US Highway above 80 in which it's possible to run without the snow pack piling on 80 below. Despite the storm winds etc. up there. But no, there was no net in my time. It's awesome to have this information.
