First time to Montreal, or Quebec for that matter. What is the easiest way in? Is it fairly stress free or is the Montreal metro area a cluster?
Best way into Mount Royal

Montreal is like driving in the Indy 500 with a bunch of people who feel they have nothing to live for.
Other than that it's just fine.belowspeedlimit and Macneil Thank this. -
Mount Royal is the eye of the maelstrom. Preview your route on Google Street View and try to memorize some of the road signs. The highway signs and the street signs are in French with sometimes indecipherable abbreviations. You must have a plan of attack because there is no pausing to think once you are within a 50 mile radius of the swirling madness of Montreal motoring. It's like doing macramé in a tornado. Make the slightest mistake and you'll be trapped forever but you'll love it because Montreal is a fun city! The Montreal motto is "Well-Being Through Harmony" but that does not apply to driving in Montreal.

Mon ami, Bon Jour
Montreal is like any other big city, too many cars for too little real estate. If you speak and read French, that's a plus. If you're going to Laval, get in and out, don't spend the night, kinda like the south Bronx area in NYC, bad things happen there once the sun goes down. Lots of real good pastry shops there though, Bon Journee.... -
Pro tip: Having French translations (Google Translate) of English words for directions and common street names; i.e., left, right, north, south..., Avenue, Street..., etc., written down on a piece of paper you can reference en route and studying your route beforehand will make your life beaucoup plus facile
