First time to Montreal, or Quebec for that matter. What is the easiest way in? Is it fairly stress free or is the Montreal metro area a cluster?

Montreal is like driving in the Indy 500 with a bunch of people who feel they have nothing to live for.

Other than that it's just fine. :D

Mount Royal is the eye of the maelstrom. Preview your route on Google Street View and try to memorize some of the road signs. The highway signs and the street signs are in French with sometimes indecipherable abbreviations. You must have a plan of attack because there is no pausing to think once you are within a 50 mile radius of the swirling madness of Montreal motoring. It's like doing macramé in a tornado. Make the slightest mistake and you'll be trapped forever but you'll love it because Montreal is a fun city! The Montreal motto is "Well-Being Through Harmony" but that does not apply to driving in Montreal.

    Mon ami, Bon Jour
Montreal is like any other big city, too many cars for too little real estate. If you speak and read French, that's a plus. If you're going to Laval, get in and out, don't spend the night, kinda like the south Bronx area in NYC, bad things happen there once the sun goes down. Lots of real good pastry shops there though, Bon Journee....

Pro tip: Having French translations (Google Translate) of English words for directions and common street names; i.e., left, right, north, south..., Avenue, Street..., etc., written down on a piece of paper you can reference en route :D and studying your route beforehand will make your life beaucoup plus facile

Depends on time of day and which direction you are coming from. Avoid the tunnel during rush hour. Champlain bridge usually best but depends as well where construction is.

    Wait..just wait..

There's a good time to scoot across MTL? Neverrrr!

All I can say is plan your route. I am French from Onterrible and plan specifically every trip unless it's right thru!

Jeez trying to scare the guy ... mont royal is a tight area but the cops don't bug you even if you end up on non trucks routes provided your delivering in the area .. it's no big deal other than being slow to get at it if you just stay relaxed I've been going there 3 or 4 times a month for 15 years once you realize that ppl are aggressive you account for that and it's easy as can be
