Around 1990 I came down with a weird rash, went to the VA and they put me on some meds that kept me from driving for the itching. 3 years later they finally figured out what was wrong with me and gave me meds to cope with it, and those meds allowed me to drive again. But in the meantime, I let my CDL lapse. In order to get it back, I had to re-test. So I called the school I went to originally, told them what I needed to do, they let me spend a few days on the parade ground practicing (you dont ever forget how to back up once you learn it btw) and gave me one of their reserved test slots and a truck to take the test in.
