I just purchased a truck from a dealership in Chicago. I need to bobtail the truck back to Los Angeles to my leased companies yard. I should have my DOT in about two weeks.
Can I bobtail the truck back to LA before my DOT gets assigned to me? Can I pay for temporary permits for the states that I will be traveling through to get to LA without a DOT number? I was hoping to bring the truck back this coming week and didn't want to wait the two weeks before my DOT gets assigned.

Yes, you can get a transient permit from each state. I know there are companies that you pay a fee and they'll take care of it for you, but it's still a PITA. Usually the company you lease to has resources for transient. Have you asked?

Just drive it. Run the night, sleep the day.

I was going to suggest that. Just slapping a NOT FOR HIRE on it and going. But I know you do have to have insurance regardless, it IS a vehicle on the road after all. But I didn't want to have him mad because he got a big ticket.
