Boeing 777 bombs children with jet fuel.

The pilots had no way of knowing how much damage may have been caused, they only knew they had a compressor stall (engine failure). It could have been simple, it could have been catastrophic (high potential for fire).

Yes, normal procedures and regulations require them to dump fuel over unpopulated areas, but ultimately the pilot has the authority to deviate from those procedures if deemed necessary. However, the ATC/pilot communications lead to some confusion:

Air traffic control asked the aircrew if they wanted to return to LAX immediately or remain over the ocean "to hold and burn fuel," according to a recording of the radio communications.

"We're going to go ahead," the pilot or co-pilot responds. "We've got it back under control. ... We're not critical."

"OK, so you don't need to hold or dump fuel or anything like that?" the controller asks.

"Ah, negative," the pilot responds.

IIRC all of Delta’s 777 fleet is Rolls Royce Trent powered. And Rolls Royce has had ongoing issues with their Trent engines.

 

That’s certainly lower than 10,000 feet (more like 5,000 feet).

 

Jet A is kerosine.

 

It may not be boeings fault but they will still catch flack over it especially if it was a mechcanical malfunction
