The Bellboy probably was more kind to the man than his own relatives were.

Right; probably sent some women his way and didn't blab his mouth about it.

Reminds me of a driver in our northAmerican VanLines fleet when I first started in 1976. He was driving a 1966 Dodge single axle cabover, 318 Detroit, ancient oddball by any standard. Rusty steel cab, fleets specs. But paid for. I saw him several times, nice guy just rather unkempt, wrinkled uniform, 2 day beard. Lived with his mother, went home about once every 2 months.
He kept his personal car at NAVL HQ in Fort Wayne, left the truck there drove home. One day I noticed him getting into a new Mercedes 300D (diesel) sedan
Next time I saw him I asked about it.
He described how he walked into about 3 Mercedes dealers in the Chicago area asking about one. They all gave him the bums rush. Dealer #4 answered all of his questions, let him test drive one. This car was probably twice the money of a new Chevrolet at the time, $13K or more. He arranged to have a bank transfer that day and paid for it in cash.
    Ya never know.....
