Hi Truckers,
My friend who lives and works in the USA as a truck driver (Chicago) wants to buy a truck here in Canada and register it in America.
We are currently exploring ways to do this.
Has anyone done this?
Can I do it myself or is it better to find a company that does this?
Are taxes paid only in Canada or do they have to be paid in America at the time of registration as well?

It's easy enough to do. You need to verify that it confirms with FHWA and EPA for that year. If it is an American truck, VIN beginning 1 instead of 2, then it complies. If it is Canadian, VIN beginning 2, then you need a letter from the manufacturer that it complies.
FET is paid to the irs. You'll need to pay the customs fee, around $12 when I imported my truck.
Canada doesn't have titles, so you need the registration and bill of sale.Last edited: Feb 16, 2022

I used to work for a Canada based carrier.
Every time a new unit came into the US for the first time we had to pay the US customs fee.
We had a few old Canadian KW day cabs with mechanical speedometers reading Kilometers; drove NJ's fuel tax auditors nuts till we discovered it was in Klicks but todays electric units should be able to switch to miles now. -
Why register in US - he can register here and drive in the US as long as 'the driver' is leaglly entitled to work in the US. One of our O/O is looking into this
Aslanbek Thanks this. -
I thought that not registered vehicles from Canada can stay in US only for 1 year with no registration, no?
And I think the purpose of the registration in US is he has a truck company and wants to register a truck under his company's name for tax purposes or etc. -
Could you describe step by step action what we have to do, if you know, please?!
I mean once we confirmed that the vehicle confirms all FHWA and EPA, do we have to register it under his company's name which is in US?
How about the insurance? -
Aslanbek Thanks this.

I am waiting for details before we commit to running the truck
