I live in NY and want to buy a truck in Joplin MO. From what I've read I'll need bobtail insurance and the dealer will give me a temp registration or I'll get an intransit sticker. Can I use paper logs for the trip?
Also, Is it possible to rent a trailer and haul a load back to NY? If so, what would be needed then?
Thanks

Paper logs are fine, you have 8 days to run without an ELD.
As for renting a trailer and haul a load you will need to have the truck covered under an active DOT/MC number, insured and properly registered -or trip permits.
The temporary that most dealers issue is a unladen in-transit permit, also know as a "hunter's permit" in some states. It is not legal to haul loads on these temporary permits.Bean Jr., Expeditor, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
Look at the cost of transport as part of the price of the truck. Get it home, get all the paperwork done, then worry about making money with it.

Less stress bobtail home get legal first. Or handle paperwork via Notorizing or ? Whatever they require. You will need title transferred to get IRP and show up with plate ( mc# dot# ins) also

Why use paper logs when there is the KeepTruckin' app? I forgot a long time ago how to do a paper log. That's probably going to bite me someday.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
To get a new truck home, actual paper is easier than toting around a printer.AlexanderK Thanks this. -
You also will need a signed lease agreement with a active carrier to get your IRP. Even if you are the carrier you need a lease agreement with your carrier business.
