i had a broker tell me they only make 10% on a load

just like truckstops make only 5cents a gallon

    both are not true

prime and others get 20-40cents per gallon fuel discounts
brokers play with the numbers and shear hundreds of dollars off the cost of the load (check out the TQL threads)

You're half right. Prime probably gets significant fuel savings. Very rarely do we "shear hundreds of dollars" off a load. At least not us. I'm sure with some of the crap I see out there from other brokers we try and help find capacity for that's not the case.

landstar doesnt accept OOIDA insurance, why? because OOIDA has sued the pants off landstar many times for cheating drivers out of monies

i dont work for Landstar and i dont know nothing about how you guys work, but dont come claiming these companies dont shave money off the cost of the load, because that is emphatically not true

ask any O/O how many times the load has been sold for $1000 and you find out later that they gave it to a lower bidder for $800 or less

    volvodriver01 Thanks this.

mind you, i have spoken to brokers who say what you say

they say they make peanuts on the load, and if another broker underbids their price by pennies, they lose the customer

but the same broker will tell me that once he has a price for a load, he can sell it to the carrier for any price the carrier agrees to, and the carrier rarely knows how much money he has left on the table

Actually, no... it's because Landstar requires insurers to have a B+ or better rating from AM. If you'll notice, OOIDA doesn't even have a rating. That's because they refuse to let AM come in and give them a rating. Ratings are based off of clients and how and when claims are paid per how it was explained to me. You would think OOIDA would want them to come in and give them that B+ or better now wouldn't you? Would that not lead to more people signing up? I've heard from O/O's that used to have OOIDA insurance and they had nightmares trying to get claims paid and what not. So no, despite the "truckstop talk," it has nothing to do with OOIDA's lawsuit against Landstar however many years ago it was.

Now, as to your other statement. You're absolutely correct. You don't know how we work, so instead of mouthing off and coming off with a smart ### demeanor like you do know... why not ask a question or learn something? I've got nothing to hide as you can see from my 1,500+ posts I've made here in the last year. Many will tell you that they've pm'ed me with questions and I've given them honest answers every time... sometimes not even the answer they were wanting to hear. We don't shave money off of anything at my agencies six offices. We quote the loads to our customers or setup contracted rates for long term, large customers, and then we try to move the loads for less than that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and we move the loads anyway to keep our customers happy. It's called business super trucker... I'm not here to do it for free. Average margin is 3-5%. Sometimes if its a hot lane, we can get 10% if we're lucky. Now quit being so bitter, quit being a know it all, and learn the ins and outs of the business and how to make yourself successful.

OOIDA is backed by Lloyds of London, hence a secondary (if thats the right term) backer and you cant get better than Lloyds for insurance

Not sure what to tell you friend. If they don't have an AM Best Rating of B+ or better then they don't get approved to haul for Landstar. OOIDA isn't rated and won't get rated... therefore their constituents who use their insurance can't haul for Landstar. That's straight from the horses mouth at carrier qualifications.

I am not following your logic. If you hire a moving company to move your sofa and tv from point A to B and they cause an accident how would you as a customer be liable?

It's the same thing if you're a business entity hiring Acme trucking to move your 20 skids.

The bill of goods that he was trying to sell is that (if IF) the carrier had a bad safety rating AND owner of the sofa didn't check the carriers' safety rating, the owner could be liable because the owner could have known and should have known that the carrier had a bad safety record and therefore caused the accident by hiring the bad carrier when he actually should not have hired him.

BUT this could all have been avoided by paying LS to move the sofa because they have a cracker jack legal team and a direct line to the FMCSA for minute by minute downloads that nobody else can access. AND, if there is an accident LS promises (verbally over the phone and on internet message boards) to put Cochrane and Shapiro on the case to get you off the hook.

UNTIL the accident does happen, at such time LS will not answer your phone calls and they will claim all the rhetoric was just a metaphor and they will trot out the clause in the contract that holds them harmless.

    Or something like that. :)
