Looking for opinions on who to build a complete c15 preferably in or near eastern Nc for a 389 glider that currently has a Detroit in it. Thanks

You have a good core that needs rebuilt?

Gonna have to do your homework on finding a reputable rebuilder to get the quality results. Even CAT houses can be poor quality.

The cheapest bid will most certainly not be the best choice as quality takes time and experienced time is expensive.

Factory CAT reman with a OPT warranty may be the best option.

No core I’m sure I could find one. As for warranty truck doesn’t get a lot of miles maybe 20k a year so unless something is bad wrong it’ll probably be out of warranty before anything shows up. Im going to get a quote for a new one from cat already talked to pdi just because I hear so much about them. Feel like a good shop could build one a lot cheaper I just don’t know anyone personally and I have no experience rebuilding cats.

Local Pete dealer had factory remans on the floor for 33k with ECM. Think the core was 6k? Not bad IMO for a factory reman

If you want say 800hp do you buy a reman and change cam and injectors or start from scratch and build it ?

If you need a rebuildable CAT engine we have a few. Several running CAT engines also. Not sure what models they are. I can check if you are interested.

If you want 800 you’re better off doing it yourself. If you’re using an Acert you want to drop compression to 16 to 1 preferably using a steel monotherm piston. Make sure the cam you are gonna use matches the injector or you’re gonna get a flutter above idle. Get someone with a little sense to do the ECM tell them to not add a lot of fuel at the end of injection cycle or it’s gonna run hot. An OEM 4 core radiator will do you more good than any aftermarket dimple tube or 5 core crap.
At 800 your not gonna have a lot of longevity 300k maybe that’s the thing about ponies the more you have the harder it is on the block no way around that

Truck doesn’t see a ton of miles but I would think a well built 800hp 15 liter would last past 300k with a decent driver grossing around 100k. The 12.7 in it has over half a million with no issues supposedly set at 600.

I never seen a driver that didn’t use the resources at hand. Sure keep the temps in check the RPM up to keep air moving thru it. But it takes a bigger boom and more forced air to add 200 to 250 extra ponies. You wanna move 50 ton like 40 ton it’s gonna cost you. On the front end you need to start with a perfect block. Any C15 with 500k miles is gonna have wear in the lower bores. You can sleeve them good as new. But if 625 at max 550 more commonly wears the lowers in 500k (still very useable usually but very noticeable) what’s 800 gonna do? CAT, Cummins, Detroit or Allis Chambler there is a point where you go from manageable to not. And if you’re gonna have 800 you’re gonna use it doesn’t matter who you are. Expecting more 300 to 350 out of 800 trouble free is asking for a lot. Sure a CAT has more displacement but you’re wanting 200 more HP out of it. Quite a jump

As far as the whole set at X hp, that’s not how it works. Those are guess numbers till you run one on the dyno it’s anyone’s guess. The same combination in 2 different engines will make very different numbers sometimes.
