Keep in mind that Sean Duffy has incentives to classify everything as illegal immigrant licenses. It's entirely possible that they found small discrepancies that were just easily fixed clerical errors.

"As a result of the stay, California will now reissue the 17,000 CDLs slated for cancellation with new, updated, and correct expiration dates to qualified drivers with valid work authorization. The administration is still working to prepare a permanent regulation and review public comments on the matter."

The underlined part is the qualifier. It won't be as easy as the title suggests.

So does this mean all the huff & puff is a waste of time? It's as though someone only wants chaos to keep reoccurring no matter what!

It was always about expirations dates.

It is Sean Duffy that called them 'fraudulent' because it made him appear like he was doing something about this situation, when he really has no intention of removing the cheep foreign labor. That would not satisfy his campaign donors.

With a few exceptions, almost all the 17,000 had work authorization, just some idiot in the CA DMV did not follow the federal rules in setting the non-domiciled CDL expiration date.

I'm curious why the 17 000 CA CDL licenses got cancelled? Maybe I missed something and it makes no sense to cancel them and then say oh we were wrong now we are going to re-issue you with new ones. Sounds like even the CA government {DOT} does not even understand the rules. If all the 17 000 were issued illegally then 100 % they should be cancelled, if all 17 000 had legal status, e.g green card or work visa then they can be issued with a CDL. For many years Farmers and Harvesting contractors have been bringing in foreign workers on the H2a visa who at some point had to be issued with a CDL to haul grain this has never been an issue, usually a person on a temporary work visa like the H2a is issued with a license that is only valid for the duration of their stay, e.g they arrive in the USA on May 10 th 2025 CBP grant them 8 months stay which expires on 9 th January 2026 the state issuing the license puts down an expiry date for 9 th January 2026.
