I want to become an owner operator but I have a few minor incidents on my record. Is it possible for my stepdad to get insurance for me even if he doesn’t have and has never had a CDL A? I would be the one leasing the truck.

I don't think you can do that, but I was a company driver. Lots of Owner-Ops will be along soon.

Wont quite work that way, insurance co will need your driving record as the driver in order for them to adjust their rates to who is actually driving

First, what are your minor incidents if you don’t mind sharing..

Second, are you planning to lease on to a carrier or get your own authority?

Step dad could put the business in his name and hire you but your mvr is going to follow you no matter what you do.

More details of what you’re planning to do would help generate better answers. Maybe your incidents are nothing to worry about or perhaps everything to worry about.

    More details please..

2 of my incidents don’t involve another vehicle but a concrete barrier at a shipper and a trailer tire. Is insurance able to see those incidents?

If you lease-op, instead of owner-op, you operate under the trucking company insurance. But the risk is the trucking company sets the lease terms (expenses) and the only way to shop around is by shopping around trucking companies from which you lease-op.

The real answer is live with your past incidents, stop making new incidents NO MATTER WHAT and when those incidents become unimportant, say 3 years after the last one, you get insurance at the rates for drivers with clean records.

IMO, desperately rushing into something you are not 100% familiar with to try and avoid the consequences just creates a spiral of worse and worse results if you have not completely resolved what caused the incidents. It costs nothing to be the most careful driver on the road.

Insurance companies are difficult these days to establish for a reasonable rate because of all the truck accidents according in North America. 90% of the time they want more experience for the driver on the insurance for a good rate. I've been a driving with my cdl for nearly 30 years experience driving but only an O/o for 2 years and couldn't qualify for insurance until last month. No tickets & no accidents and a good driving record. The Insurance Brokers told me that the insurance companies want to see a driver as a O/o under someone else's experience 1st. So, that's what I did. Now my rate is reasonable. Accident usually stay on a drivers record for 6 years. I would recommend Leasing onto a Carrier as a O/o. Keep your driving record clean for 1 to 2 years.

    No.
Unless you have more than those minor incidents you won’t have any problems.

Got a warning for speeding 16 miles over a 30 mph speed limit going down a hill in PA in my first 5 months of driving. It was a speed trap. Not sure if warnings show up to insurance. Also was turning in a small shipper and knocked over yellow concrete barrier. No damage to truck but concrete barrier broke. Lastly, has back to back parking at a Loves in CA and backed into another trucks trailer going less than 5 mph. The trailer was sticking into my parking spot. All this happened a year and a half ago. When I say “ minor” I mean no damage to any vehicle.
