I worked for an owner/non-CDL holder who would meet me at the fuel pumps to fuel up with his card. That didn't last long. He goes through drivers like no tomorrow.

Just check the diesel prices in the area online- as of Jan. 11 2021 it was $.84/liter, that's $3.17/gallon, and 110 gallons would be $349.27.

At that price 95 gallons would be $301.15. Maybe the driver in question in this thread is actually owed money.

Some of you guys kill me.

Because the system currently discounts tax for fuel cards and credit cards will have state tax levied. If you are in one state there's no need to bother with IFTA.

Yeah I know how ifta works. I just don't get the part about paying higher price at the pump due to not having ifta. Ive never seen a difference in price according to having ifta or not

Another person commented about having a 115 gallon tank and not paying over $300 in the Chicago area. So, I included both the 115 gallon example and the 90+ gallon example for the 100-gallon tank genius.

What exactly was the price per gallon at that fuel station the day in question? You say "fuel near Chicago is under $3". Ok.

Was it $2.87/gallon? Was it $2.13/gallon?

That's how "math" works. Unless you want us to use variables, in which case, different amounts on the receipt are a function of those variables and coming up with different numbers is not "lying" or "cheating" it's simply substituting different numbers for each variable.

How much fuel was in the tank? Were there 5 gallons? 10 gallons? Again, if you don't know exactly how much, then there's another variable.

All of a sudden your "math" is not simple addition and subtraction but algebra with variables.

My only question in this thread is the issue of a single receipt being the measure for whether the driver is trustworthy or a thief. A receipt, mind you, that he only needed to obtain because he paid out of pocket for a company expense.

It's clear as day you don't know very well, nor do you trust your driver. Math or no math. Maybe he treated himself to lunch with the change. Maybe he pocketed the difference. You said you have a 95% capacity, 100-gallon tank and fuel has been "under $3 a gallon, or thereabouts, and there was "some fuel in the tank" when he made the purchase- so...

That's 95g - Ag X [a range of $2.60:$2.99/g] < $300.

Your driver says the equation is 100g - Ag X [a range of $2.60:$2.99] > $300

I'm going to err on the side of the driver here and use your equation and where "g"= gallons of diesel and assuming there was 5 gallons of fuel in the tank:

95g - 5g X [$2.99/g] = $269.10

If your driver pocketed $31.90 for paying out of pocket for fuel, whether it was intentional or a mistake- you are a petty person for making this into a situation you need to investigate for "evidence" of "stealing".

Are you that hard up for $30?

If my boss was eyeballing me and griping online about $30 that he thought I stole from him during one of the many times I've paid out of pocket for something on the road- hotels, meals, repairs, etc. How would he not be a petty, distrusting, hypocritical, slimeball?

So what your policy is the driver has to check for fuel before they leave? Then they have to ask you for the credit card too?

It's a stupid and inefficient policy.

You aren't required to do IFTA because you're a "private local" outfit?

How about you do some basic accounting yourself like keeping track of expenses, fueling, trip totals, mileage, etc. so that you would have an idea if a truck needs fueling or not?

Or do you only do "math" when it comes to suspecting your drivers of stealing from you when they're paying out of pocket for fuel because you're an idiot and make them do things like check fuel levels and ask for fueling cards before leaving?

I'm sure if you cry a little more on this forum, we can all put together a collection for you and get you your $30.

Thanks. I do understand what you are saying. That is why I am harboring doubts PRIVATELY and not publicly (in the company). And asking how can I verify to find out what is the truth. I am human and I am allowed to doubt anything.

An update. I went to the truck stop and asked for a receipt with fuel and presented to them the preauth receipt. They gave me a long form receipt. It turns out that the driver did not lie to me and used up all 300. He was almost completely out of fuel and used 104 gallons. I never ran out of fuel in his truck (he did before) and whenever I woud fill it would be 90 gallons or so and the tank says 100 gallons.

I am very glad that I asked you guys, also that I verified everything and know that I was not cheated. I had my reasons to doubt and I am very glad that in this instance everything was above the line. I am very glad that I wasted an hour in my own truck to stop by at that specific fuel oasis. Thanks to all.
