Can we talk about the Detroit Bull Gear?

I did over 1.9 miles

 

Here is my bull gear. The valve lash was still in spec and the bull gear had almost no play. It's not something that I would've caught just by taking an accessory drive off. This came off a 97 FLD with 1.5 million. Not sure if it was ever replaced or not.



On a side note, in 2003 Detroit went to a compact geartrain and it's a lot beefier. That's what both a Detroit mechanic and the guy who I bought my remanufactured bull gear from told me. Apparently those don't have a taper bearing anymore and don't fail. I will confirm this when I take my 2003 apart to fix an oil leak behind the front cover.

 

My 06 Columbia detriot bull gear went bad. And it was smoking like a freight train every morning start up for about 3 to 5 min.

 

Good to know. What went bad on it, the bearings? And how was it causing it to smoke?

 

I had to replace bearing and all. Guy said it jumped timing. New bull gear solved everything.

 

Did it jump from the bearing being so loose or did it break teeth?
