I need help with this question…I’m new to this forum so maybe this has been covered many times. I haul hazmat…once in a while to Canada, seems like when I’m up there, hazmat trucks do not stop for RR tracks, do I need to? Can you cite the rule if not. Thank you for your help with this

The Transportation Safety Board definitely RECOMMENDS trucks hauling HazMat stop prior to railway crossings. I would stop. NOT maintain full road speed and with no warning slam on the brakes and get rear-end. But gradually slow to a stop prior to the crossing. Look and proceed when safe. This link is finally Canada related.
In Canada I think they call HazMat Dangerous Goods. I'll try that in an internet search.Last edited: Oct 17, 2024

I'm glad you asked. It's always batter to ask a question than guess at an answer.
Don't be afraid to do an internet search, either.Albertaflatbed Thanks this. -

Every province ''can'' have different rules on this, example in PQ if you have flammable ''red background placards'' you better stop at any RR tracks or big fine.
I'm not sure the actual law in other provinces but I always stopped to be sure hauling gas.

Thanks…it’s only Ontario that I go into…and with an Oxidizer…this has been helpful. Be safe out there

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada recommends that coordinate with the appropriate provincial authorities to require that tank trucks placarded for the transport of dangerous goods stop at all public crossings before proceeding.Aug 5, 1991
