These guys are in South Elgin, IL. Not quite Elk Grove but pretty close (lol). Also 1099. I searched but did not find anything here on the forums. If you look them up on Google Maps they have good reviews (I see some Russian and translated from English, and I have no doubt that some number of those reviews are from their own office staff, etc. but maybe at least a couple are actually from drivers).
Now, I have been reading these forums long enough to know all about Chicagoland 1099 companies. But I have some mitigating circumstances, hear me out.
I have some things going against me. I have a "preventable" crash, not quite 2 years old yet. I live in Florida, and I worked local the last year or so (only truck driving job I could get at the time). My prospects improved a little, but not much. Also, I keep reading on here the economy is bad and trucking is bad. So at this point I am even considering applying to U.S. Xpress for Chrissakes (apparently they have a terminal somewhere in north central Florida, as I show as being within their hiring area).
But I would much rather do flatbed, for lots of reasons.
Now, on to the good. They are offering good pay and generous home time. The latter is important to me, I have a family and a house to maintain and coming out of Florida everyone wants me out for 4 weeks (at least) which is fine, but then most companies want you to only have a few days or worse just do a 34 and get right back out there. These guys say they will give me 7 to 10 days home which almost no-one seems to be offering.
I also had my own business for 20 years before I got my CDL. So I can keep my own books and pay my taxes and stay out of hot water with the 1099 thing. There might even be some tax advantages I could claim. I know it's not ideal, but it might not be such a bad option for me, at least at this time.
Please tell me I'm crazy (or maybe not).

How do you know you can "stay out of hot water with the 1099 thing" in trucking if you've never been a 1099 contractor? They say they'll give you 7 to 10 days home? INDEPENDENT contractors in other industries usually get to decide their schedule or a portion of it, as they're SELF-EMPLOYED. These 1099 trucking companies know what type of reputation they have and they know what type of drivers seek them out. They have bad reputations because they don't keep their word, they don't pay fairly or treat their drivers correctly. We all make mistakes in trucking, some worse than others. Considering you had an accident less than 2 years ago. You should continue to drive locally.
I would give it 2-4 FULL years local before seeking out any OTR gig, especially before I would consider a 1099 fly-by-night driving job. Imagine being a Hiring agent for a legitimate trucking outfit, and then you receive an application from a driver who not only had an accident but instead of going through the process to prove they learned from the mistake, decided to take a shortcut, with a run of the mill 1099 entity, that probably will have a different name in 6 months to a year. If you're with a legit local outfit, give it a full 2-3 years, try the US Xpress route, or any other starter or second chance company that IS LEGIT. In this job market, there's no way a 1099 position will help you or your career.snowlauncher, Milr72, Suspect Zero and 2 others Thank this. -
Jump on it.
it’s 100% legal to pay company employees and not pay taxes.
It’s now on the internet so it must be true. -
I would keep searching in your area.
I think those Chicago companies are complete last resort, hail Mary passes that should only be considered in extreme circumstances, which only you can know. You have a home, a family, bills, only you truly know what's best for you. If it was me I'd be knocking on doors and making calls closer to home first. You just never know.Suspect Zero, Space Truckin and Lonesome Thank this. -
Thanks guise for taking the time to reply.
None of these local companies in Florida want to pay for ####. And they treat you like ####. And the equipment, usually, is ####. And some of the worst drivers in the country are here. I have had more close calls in the last year or so driving local here than in 3 years I was OTR before. In fact my crash happened here (they ran into me). I would rather drive in the Midwest (or anywhere, really). I worked so many hours for peanuts at my last local job, I finally realized I might as well go back OTR.
My recent experience applying to more "regular" companies is that they almost all seem to be quite hung up on "recent OTR experience" which I am also losing the longer I stay local.
I have already applied to my first (and even second) choice tier of companies. With all I have against me (coming out of Florida, crash, working local the last year, economy and trucking bad, etc.) I am getting down to these guys or some mega. Please understand, that my circumstances are not yours. Put yourself in my shoes for a moment, do you really think I will be better off at US Xpress?Last edited: Aug 16, 2024
Reason for edit: add point about crash happening herebryan21384 and Suspect Zero Thank this. -
My point is, that you had an accident, they happen. However, being picky about where you end up now, will hurt you in the future. Right now, you should focus on networking with a carrier like US Xpress, even if it's not ideal, for a couple of years. To prove that you can drive without any major incidents, to gain trust with a legitimate carrier. Then, after proving that you know what you're doing. That will alow you to be slightly more picky about what you do in the industry.
JUST MY 2 CENTS OF COURSE..
GOODLUCK!Suspect Zero, Lonesome and Space Truckin Thank this. -
Werner has a terminal in Lakeland. If I were in your position. US Xpress and Werner would be 2 companies that I'd consider settling with for the foreseeable future.
Even 1 year Werner, then 1 year US Xpress would be better than any 1099 position out of Chi Town.TheLoadOut, Suspect Zero, Space Truckin and 1 other person Thank this. -
I've been searching the forums for "1099" information, came across this in a different thread (and had a pretty good self-aware chuckle, if I'm honest):
Yes, I may be a little "eccentric" myself, lol. Remember, I had my own business for 20 years, I don't think I will make it at a mega carrier. It will be nice to be treated like an adult, without a camera pointed at me.
But more importantly, all the megas will want me out for 4 weeks and then a few days at home. That is totally unsustainable on a long-term basis. I would never make it 2-4 years doing that kind of schedule! Maybe a year.
I found them on SAFER: SAFER Web - Company Snapshot CARACAS TRANSPORTATION INC

Are the Venezuelans getting in on the Chicago action these days? You're about to get used and abused. You've got practically zero legit expenses to deduct. Like somebody else pointed out, how generous it was of them to tell their contract labor what the home time will be.. if the other red flags weren't enough that one there tells you what it's going to be.
