    All,
I've got a reefer that's got me going crazy, it's on its fourth starter in only a couple of hours run time. The reefer will start fine once and then after a couple of minutes of run time it'll smoke the starter. I've probed the starter signal wire and the motor feed coming off the solenoid and verified it does disengage after the unit is started which is my it makes no sense to me that the starter is continuing to get hot.
Any clues or ideas on what to try?

is there a control panel for this?

i'd take a look inside there for maybe a chaffing wire.

even though the solenoid disengages, do you try a few more times to make sure?

there could be a weak hold back spring in there, that due to gravity, the solenoid drops the connecting piece to the hot wire.

i'd still be more inclined at this point, to blame the solenoid

even the "start switch", could be shorting out, causing the solenoid to engage slightly.

After it starts pull the signal wire of the solenoid and let the reefer run on continuous run and see what happens.
