Hey guys,
I’m hoping some of you CAT experts can point me in the right direction. I’ve got a 1995 Freightliner with a Caterpillar 3406E, and I need to locate the serial number that’s stamped directly into the engine block.
The engine is still mounted in the truck, it has the exhaust manifold on, and there is no data plate or ID tag on the engine at all. I’ve already cleaned the usual spots, but I’m not sure exactly what area of the block I should be focusing on.
Can anyone tell me:
- Which side of the block it’s on?
- Roughly under or near which cylinders?
- Whether it’s under the exhaust manifold or closer to the oil pan?
Any tips from guys who’ve actually found one on a worn 3406E would really help.
Thanks in advance — I appreciate the knowledge in this group.
CAT 3406E – Where exactly is the serial number stamped on the block?

I’ll bite, on my 1994 E model, it was stamped on the block, passenger side, towards the rear. More like between the bottom of the block and exhaust manifold, just rear of the oil cooler.

Thanks for the info — I really appreciate you taking the time to point that out.
I’ve checked that exact location multiple times (passenger side, toward the rear, just behind the oil cooler and below the exhaust manifold), and I’m confident the serial number is not there on this block. There’s no stamping visible, even after careful cleaning and inspection.
Before I close the book on it, does anyone know of any other location on a CAT 3406E block where Caterpillar may have stamped the engine serial number? Driver side, front of the block, or any less-common spot I might be missing?
Thanks again to everyone for sharing their experience — it’s much appreciated.Oxbow, blairandgretchen and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Just have a little patience, there's a few hands on here that are pretty knowledgable with specific motors - but sometimes we get busy doing stuff.
Check back in tomorrow after their wives have hopefully let them back in the house and they have a minute to put their nose pickers on the keyboard.

I know as a fact that mine was there. I had to grind it off for a reason. I couldn’t find any other stamp VIN on the block. Good luckStar Rider, blairandgretchen and RJCR713 Thank this.

@OLDSKOOLERnWV is a Cummins guy, but was a handsome middle age man in 1995 and has seen a lot of equipment.

It’s there. Get your wire brush out. It’s a bunch of dots that make the characters so it’s not real deep
