I do quite a bit of driver assist loads and get paid for them ... most companies don't have a problem paying a lumper 300 but they won't give the driver anything. . when I was on a reefer ltl job I did almost all my own breakdown without pay because it was faster than waiting for the lumpers but I had stop pay so made more money by saving time ... but that keeps you in shape if you just sit in your truck and watch tv you will get fat if you don't want to unload truck figure out something to keep in shape . I avoid grocery warehouses and other a holes . so far for the year my lumper outlay was 75.00 I do building supply ., machinery and equipment moves . factory to factory some automotive and agricultural products. .... so if not helping unload or loadin or securement I am inside watching and it is not a bad idea to make friends with the people on the docks it can pay off later. well as far as your original post every place does things a little bit different the biggest thing is to stay calm and polite to the security ,office and dock people . it's really easy to get p o d at some places and it doesn't help to get mad that's what driver managers are for call him or her and unleash your anger on them
