Greetings everyone,
I have been wanting to do this for a few years now but am finally going to commit. I recently finalized my divorce and sold our house so I'm free. I currently work overseas, but want a job that will still have me to closer to my children. I know that sounds crazy, but at the moment I only get leave every 6 months so yes, it would be different for me.
I have a one-month leave scheduled from 24-Sep - until 23-Oct, this will be my time frame for trying to get my CDL's. I may be able to extend my leave for about a week, but it wouldn't be guaranteed. I would appreciate any advice or help with choosing a school in San Antonio area. I am currently looking at Star, which would fit the time frame and cost around 5k. They don't do the classroom part in house; they basically set you up online and let you do your studying and practice test on your own. Should I do one of the online CDL permit prep courses now, the tracks and submit the data to get credit for my ELDT? That would be once less thing that I would have to worry about.
My plan is to get my CDL's, come back to work and then start looking for a job. I would like to find something around November - December timeframe so I can collect a few more pay checks. I'm leaning toward Melton at the moment but am a bit nervous of the physical requirements of the flatbed. I would prefer to run reefer or flatbed. The ultimate goal would be to try to run for a company for about a year, and then try to get my own truck and lease it on under a company's authority not lease to own. This is my plan and failure isn't an option; this is my future. I'm blessed to be in a decent financial situation. I have some credit card debt, but it's all interest free for 2 years and not drastic along with a few pennies in the bank. I have no expenses except for my children. No house, car, or over head. I know not to expect to make much the first 6-12 months, but I still need to try to at least average around 1k per week. Home time won't be a huge issue, maybe once a month or every two months to spend time with the boys.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I have to start making my arrangements now before arriving. Thank you in advance for your help. I'm 43 by the way.

Flatbed is actually more mental than physical. Once you have some experience with the different kinds of loads and you can do it without questioning everything you do, it's not bad at all. Not to mention in flatbed you have a better schedule, pretty much all your customers are weekdays 9-5. I'm off the roads before the truck stops are slammed pretty much every day. You will net 1k/week easily, especially if you're not going home often.

Thank you for that info, i really appreciate it because i met about 6k a month at the moment but I'm tired of the job. I don't expect to make that right away, but that's why I said at least 1k a week because my expenses are ame 2k a month. Got to live divorce!
Do you think a school with only 120 hours will be sufficient, Melton did say that they prefer 160 but would accept 120. I'm on a time crunch, so do you think I should just just hush and do the 120?
Thanks again.austinmike Thanks this. -
Some companies accept 120 hr. school.
Get all the endorsements also. Even some reefer and dry van companies require endorsements.
Huge liquid totes being hauled in a dry van trailer, require tanker endorsement.
A load of paint or fingernail polish or something like that requires a hazmat endorsement even though the load might be in a dry van or reefer trailer.

Which state will you live in or zip code or town/city? Companies have hiring areas, even OTR companies. The address on your cdl determines the hiring area you live in.austinmike and Ddh77777 Thank this. -
I honestly am not sure. I believe mine was 160.

Melton has hazmat loads. Mostly roofing and buckets of glue.Chinatown Thanks this.

Consider getting your TWIC if you have time. Passport is a nice to have, but I use mine maybe once a year. TWIC most definitely. You WILL go to the ports whether you have one or not, and if you don't have have one it will be more of a hassle than it needs to be.

This is a dry van trailer with a load of liquid totes. This load requires the driver have a tanker endorsement.

Thank you guys for the info. I have my twic card and my passport already. I'm located in San Antonio 78258. I have my deposit today and got access to the online practice test and tracking. I'll start studying tomorrow to prepare for my permit.
