On the rates posted in the op? In Chicago traffic?! You would have to make two turns a day minimum for that to equate. That's not being done every day everyday in that area. not legal anyway. As for flatbed, that's exactly what I do. Otr even. And it's the easiest, best paying gig I've ever had. I once heard someone say(I think it was here on ttr in fact) that anyone that thinks flatbed is hard work, has never done hard work. And in my opinion, they are absolutely correct.

Elwood, IL - Brazil, IN - Terre Haute, IN - Elwood, IL....and so forth....

Man I hate that #### rail you speak of... "ELWOOD".. i cringe whenever i know i have to go back and terminate my box there and lift something back on there... i consider 2 hours of waiting there a blessing...

I did those cans for awhile in Houston and DAILY wanted to shoot myself! It was tearing my equipment up , it's a free for all in the ports and rail yards where VERY insecure people check you in with HUGE attitudes and everything was ALWAYS over weight , chassis equipt was a joke and ops acted like no other drivers had o.w issues when they're all heavy as ######!!! Aaaaaand then the local traffic!
    FAH GET A BOUT IT!!

Ahh. Ok. That changes things. Still to much work for to little money imo. But I'm a spoiled ### mercer guy. Last container I pulled picked up at an air force base and went to nasa. Paid so good I bounced 700 miles to get it, then bounced back to get my trailer. I saw them open it at nasa, it was filed with shovels and wheel barrels. Over five bucks a mile for freaking shovels that you could buy at the local home depot a third of the trucking cost. No wonder my taxes are so high.

I tried getting on with Mercer, but I had a car accident (non CDL related) in 2012 and according to them I needed to wait till Sept 2015 to be eligible!!!, well, so long, I know I could be making much more doing OTR flatbed (what I like to do) but my 4 year old is growing up fast, and I want to be here as much as I can. My wife has a good income and between both of us Intermodal pays the bills that her job doesn't....it ain't perfect, but it's working so far for us.....I'm also thinking of doing local flatbed with a Chicago company that has a steel contract, they also do cans, so summer I could do flatbed, winter I could do cans.....my good friend just leased on with them at the same time that I started pulling cans, so were comparing weekly settlements and runs to see what's what.

Unfortunately, I wish more local guys would do this (post rates) in the different specialties (Intermodal, flatbed, tanker) so others could pick what suits them best without having to waste a few months per company, trying to figure things out.....

This forum could be VERY useful in that respect.

I hear ya about the Lil ones growing up to fast. It's another reason I love what I do so much. I get to spend half the year at home. When I said I was otr, I didn't mean it in the traditional sense. More like when I do work, I go where the money is in order to be able to spend more quality time at home. It's a tough balancing act, we gotta work to provide for them, and yet we gotta figure out how to be there with them as much as possible.

Something to consider for ya, you should be able to run regional in that area. Could probably be home every other day. Like make a roundtrip to cinci, two days at home and repeat. I've often though about relocating the family to Louisville and doing that. Leaving before my baby wakes up, and getting home after bedtime kinda kills the point of home every night.

Just food for thought. Here's to good fortune for you and yours.

    RERM,

Give me a few local locations and I'll check out my settlement to see if I went to any of those destinations. Did fairly a bit of local the past couple of weeks.. dont know why, i love regional but dispatcher(only one dispatcher anyways) decided to put me on local for a couple of weeks. hated that ####! but nonetheless, never complained to him or rejected, just took it. not a bad gig but i just dont like it. I'm more of a pickup from the rail or our yard and off ya go!!!
