    One possibility is they put new shoes on worn out drums and it got hot and came apart.

    Speaking of the CHP, on my way back from Oregon yesterday, I noticed a CHP on the northbound side of I-5 near Red Bluff giving a car a jump start. He even moved his patrol car around to face the car needing a start. It may not seem like a big deal to most of you, but highway patrol almost never do this kind of thing, and will wait with the motorist until a mechanic arrives. Occasionally I'll see them help an elderly person change a flat, but it's rare.
