Greetings, kings & queens of the road!

I have to take a San Francisco - Norfolk, VA trip within the next three weeks and could use some route help. Must take my gas-guzzling s.u.v.

I have taken this trip before but in a more roundabout way, I80 to I76 to I70 towards D.C., then down I95 and I64. I want to take a more direct route this time and was wondering if I80 to I25 South to Denver to I70 East and I64 from St. Louis might be the best route? Any construction or other delays that might make me want to alter my route? Other routes?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I'm thinking about using truck stops for grabbing some shut-eye rather than motels on my eastbound trip along I70 & I64. Any recommendations on specific stops to check out? Also, generally I hear that Flying J and Petro stops are better than TA and Pilot stops - agree/disagree?

    Thanks.

The most efficient route is I80 to I 29 south to US36 (MO) to US 61 to I64 into Norfolk...

Thats the most fuel efficient route and about as short as you can get it...2,955 miles

Its 11 miles longer to take I29 down to I70 across Missouri to I64...not any faster though.

EDIT: to get to US61 from US36 you kinda have to "cut the corner off" and take State Highway W east to State Highway A to US61 south...otherwise its a few miles longer than staying on the big road.

Petros are nicer than most others...but there are not many of them compared to the others.

    Thanks for the responses.

So, even though it's a shorter distance to connect to I70 from I80 via I25 from Cheyenne to Denver than from Omaha - KC via I29, you prefer I29?

I agree with almost all of this.
Insted of running I-80 to I-29 you cut off on hwy 2 in Lincoln,Ne and take that to I-29 it save sometime and miles. If I remember right it cuts off 40-50 miles.

:biggrin_25525: Theres always another shortcut waiting to be found...:yes2557:

You just gotta be willing to look for them (it gets interesting sometimes...10 ton bridges, low overpasses, turns too sharp to make, tree limbs, etc.)

    Yes, they suggest adopting both ridgerunner's and kelgar's routes - I80 to 77S to NE2 to I29S to I435E to I70E to I64.

If you are planning on the I64 area in St. Louis, be prepared to take the bypass around and catch it.

Thanks for the heads-up. Which bypass are you referring to?
