You can adjust the RPM lower and voltage will drop.

I had to raise one of our new ones because of too low voltage.

upgrade to a 40MFD capacitor and see if it works.

Hey guys, recently purchased a truck with a comfort pro 6012 apu that cranks but won't start. It isn't throwing any codes on the control panel inside. I do however get the "ALT F/B" and "ALT POWER" lights to come on outside in the apu control unit. I removed the generator to try and get it tested. I went to 3 different shops but none of them knew how to test it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if a circuit breaker trips or doesn't work will the generator still crank at all or will it cut off all power completely until it is reset?

    Thanks!

I’m no certified tech and didn’t have the same issue you had. But I’ve had one time the whole system went down. Found out when the alternator goes bad it’ll eventually blow the fuse connecting to the batteries. Maybe you got bad connections or a bad alternator. I’d probably just bite the bullet and let a certified carrier shop deal with it. If you’re in the northeast the penn power groups in PA I tend to have good experiences with.

I replaced the alternator, and the pigtail connector because the pins looked pretty bad. I tested the fuses right at the truck battery for continuity and they had continuity. A buddy of mine is telling me it's the generator. He said his had the same issue when he bought a used one. It would crank but wouldn't turnover. He replaced all the fuses and still nothing until he replaced the generator. Mine looks pretty old and like it hasn't been replaced. The unit had a little over 18,000 hours on it. I don't mind spending the $1,700 on a new generator if I knew it'd work with it but that's the thing, idk.

The Alt/FB light isn't telling you anything about the generator. It's telling you the control unit doesn't sense any output from the alternator. There is a wire that goes from the alternator to the control unit. That wire is known to go bad causing the unit to crank but not start. It wasn't a large enough gauge to begin with and it corrodes. Try replacing that wire before you do anything else since it's a common problem and cheap to fix.
