I'd like to go to a school and get my CDL and then apply at a large company id:Swift, Schneider, New Century, Knight, etc..

From all my research it looks like that's pretty much the best way to go about getting a CDL and experience.

I say that i think it's better to go to a school rather than the company sponsored training is because a school is more patient and will help you until you get that class A.

My main question/concern is that i have a annual vacation planned in January of next year. How possible do you think that the company i go with will actually get me home and home on time for the weekend? (Even if they say it's not a problem in the interview i still have my doubts.)

My next question is, off the top of your head which companies do you guys know of that hire's drivers at the age of 22? I called Swift and they told me to call back when i am 23. I'm ready to go now! haha.

    1. go to Jc or school.. Company school you become their slave.. I paid for mine financed it over a year..

    2. No you won't get off in January here it is September 18 and you haven't even started school it would be Thanksgiving before you get going out of school and training.. This isn't a vacation friendly business.. esp at tht start..

    3. Not really any clue anymore but I will throw some names out.... Werner... Scheinder... Transport America (would along time ago) Watkins Shepard... Central Refrig...CR England maybe.. they are pretty much the start ups.. But if Swift told you to call back... that driver shortage they speak of must not be to bad

you are almost at the point where if you go to school you wont be ready to go to work until first of the year anyway
especially if you go thru a local college where the courses are longer
    TransAm hires at 22
so bottom line just get your cdl and go to work after the vacation
just within 90 days of getting your cdl or companies will want a refresher

All depends on what MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) is needed or not. With one war ended and another winding down, we don't particularly need people to be cannon fodder at the front line, but still need to move freight.

There is also Boyd Brothers, Maverick, H.O. Wolding, Wel, Us. Express, Crete, TMC, TransAm, Averitt, and Roehl. It all depends on what you want to go into..flatbed, dryvan, or refer. The second thing you need to look at is if they are hiring in your area. My suggestion is to do the Junior college, and then take your time researching the companies, and then decide which ones to put your application into. As a new driver you will have to put your time in for 1 year, and if you like the company you can stay with them or find a different one that suits your needs more.

January is typically when freight is the slowest and this is when most drivers take their home time. Run as hard as you can from now till then and don't take any time off. Make sure once you are assigned your truck and dispatcher you let them know you have a vacation planned. They will do their best to get you home but this is NEVER a guarantee. Always leave yourself a two day window if you plan on flying. This way if you are a day or two late getting home you won't miss your costly flight.

On a side note, most companies aren't going to give you more than 3-5 days off at a time. If you take off more than that they will make you turn your truck in. Being you are a newbie and still have to go through school and then training, by the time you are issued a truck you will have to turn it in to take your time off. I would personally recommend you either wait to get into the industry or change your vacation plans.

O/p i work for new century and they require at least one year exp.

As far as vacation, thats your job. You get to see the country, just not pick what you.want to.see. Id say hold.off until.after the vaca and dont plan it next year.

For being 23, i think its either an insurance issue or they think.a 23 yo is more mature and responsible than.a.21yo.
