I got my CDl at 20. Nobody would hire me so I just took a local job in a steel factory for a year. Applied to Schneider on my 21st Birthday. Took a refresher course in the third week of October. Went to Orientation First week of November. 1 week of orientation/training in Green Bay. 2 weeks out with the trainer OTR. 2 more days in Green Bay to take final tests. The day I passed my final testing I met my dispatcher. Was assigned a truck 3 days later on Friday. Got my first load the following Monday. That Monday was the week before Christmas. I was home Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the following day. Went back out on 12/27 for 2 weeks. Was home the second week of January for another 2 days of Home Time.
So in total it was 8 weeks from the time I applied to the time I picked up my first load. In those 7 weeks I spent 2 working my old job before quitting, and 1 week off before Thanksgiving waiting for a trainer to be available.
My CDl school was 4 weeks long when I first got my Class A. Schneider requires 160 hours(4 weeks) minimum.
So at a minimum I would say it will take you 2 months between going through a 4 week CDL School and Schneider Orientation if you were to choose them. You could theoretically get it all done and still take 3-4 days off in January if you wanted.
They like us to keep it at 5 days at home for every 4 weeks on the road. They are somewhat flexible though. In the next 4 weeks I'm taking 8 days off for vacation and a wedding. The only thing is I've been on the road for 6 weeks, will have 10 days in the middle, and will then likely be back on the road for another 3-5 weeks afterwards. I normally run 12 days out and 2 days at home. I do these longer runs though when I want to take extended home time. Can't take any more than 5 days at a time. More than that and chances are you will be asked to clean the truck out so they can reassign it while you are gone.
I have never been told that I haven't been out long enough to schedule home time. I've never taken more than 5 at once and don't intend to. They will let me run as much as I want and then go home whenever I want as long as they have 7-10 days notice. When I do the 12/2 schedule I have to tell them right away when I come back to work.
