34 yr old correctional officer looking for a new career in trucking. 2 yrs experience as a trainspotter but no CDL. I want to get my CDL but can't afford it. Heard some companies will pay for your schooling and then require you to work for them for a certain period of time... that's what I'm looking for. I live in the Chicago area. I contacted CRST but they don't offer schooling in my area. Can any of you guys guide me in the right direction... such as companys to seek out, phone numbers, anything? It would sure be appreciated.

You do understand that when you sign that training contract it's at the benifite of the company and NOT you? Sure the will train you but some company's will also starve you out as things slow down then bill you for the full inflated amount! If you leave for ANY resone you owe them, just please make sure you understand that.
Check with your state employment office, they may have funds available to get your CDL from a local school.
Use the work/training contract as a LAST RESORT! there's lots to read about it on here, check it out!

I used to be a corrections deputy. I love trucking a lot more.

I would suggest 3rd party cdl training. Just make sure their approved by the company you want to go with!!!

Hence the question..."I want to get my cdl,BUT CANT AFFORD IT." part of the mans question. They are right of course. If you can pay for your own schooling or apply for a wia unemployment type thing, do so, so that you owe nothing to anyone. It's preety easy stuff for people that are bringing home a check already every week. I on the other hand understand what you are saying about not being able to afford the training. There are alot of programs out there alot of which are on www.truckingtruth.com. check them out. you will be tied down to one company for a year or more but if your in the same boat as a lot of people out there, you prob ain't got alot of choices. You need to get experience with someone in any event so lets see, no job no money for training no hope....carry the one, times pi plus the speed of light equals do whats best for you and your family.

I agree completely with Woodman512, we all make decisions that we believe are the best for our personal situation and hopefully the decisions we make will benefit our families and our futures. People like Woodmen512 provide intelligent answers and give direction. While everyone else has posted mostly non-sense.

Sure you may truly believe it is better to stay away from a company school, and you may be right, totally correct. But, what about the man who needs a job really does want to get into trucking but has no way at all to pay for his own school none he just can not afford it? How about you professional drivers who have real experience with various companies why don't you give some advice about those companies. Companies that you would recommend and the ones you suggest people avoid particularly those men who have no experience in the industry.

There is a tremendous amount of knowledge on this site but there is also a lot of people who just want to be negative be positive it will benefit all.

For the record I would suggest the that Havoksrt4 do a lot of research regarding company programs he might want to check out FFE it has a very good deal.

However, in the end Havoksrt4 needs to make a decision and it may involve real sacrifice and he would best be served by men offering information based on their own real life experiences so he can use that information to make an informed decision. And for that my brothers the answer will require more then just telling him to: "Run away".
