I'm looking at starting out this year with my own truck and side dump trailer running locally for myself. I'm not going to be operating outside of the 100 mile air radius... or 150 mile radius now, I suppose. I don't want or need to mess with the ELD junk. I honestly don't think I'll need to go much further than 50 miles away, anyway. I certainly do not plan to cross state lines unless I need to or the job pays really well.

    My question is this:
I know that I'll obviously need a DOT number for the truck, but will I need an MC number or IFTA stickers? I've read so many conflicting things that I don't know what right. I've even seen guys with their VIN's on the side of the truck right next to their DOT numbers, though I'm not sure why...

    Any thoughts or experienced wisdom?

I wonder if the DMV in your state would have the correct answers?

You know, from the 'horses mouth'?

Every state is a little different if you are not crossing state lines. Generally intrastate operations, where the truck nor the cargo cross state lines does not require IFTA stickers or apportioned (IRP) registration plates although many states do require a USDOT number. Some also require a state issued number, usually a PUC number. I do not know the specifics on Nebraska law (assuming that is where you are based on your profile) but see below links for some information from your state.
