Have a series 6o detroit with aa bendix compressor. Truck holds air, however the compressor started popping continuosly then stops popping again. It seems like its coming out a valve on the back of compressor.. any ideas.

It could be the safety blow off valve. Is it brass and threaded into the head of compressor?
It might need replaced . Verify first governr is cutting in/out at right psi. -
It cuts off at 120, but then will start back up and start popping for 5 mins or so

could be the air governor is frozen Don't know where you at. Or when the last time you serviced the air dyer or drain the tanks all these could cause it
-
check you air governor its right where you said the popping noise is coming from

A blockage in a line will make it pop like that. Happens to ours once in a while in the winter if the discharge line freezes. Once it pops like that, there's a good chance that valve is no good now and wont seat fully. Once you find the problem, I'd put a new safety valve in it too, they're pretty cheap.
