I bought a 2012 Cascadia, with the Cummins ISX. Problems since day one. Keeps Asking for constant regen. After regen and driving for approximately 350 miles, I start getting grayish white smoke, and a strange aroma, and the regen light comes back on. I also noticed that if I pull into a truckstop and get to the fuel island, I put the truck in neutral and set my brakes, the truck is idling at 850 RPM instead of the normal 600 RPM. The truck will run like that for about three or four minutes and then idle back down to 600 rpm. And it is using a lot of fuel, not just because of all the constant regens, i’m barely getting 5 to 5 1/2 miles per gallon running deadhead . I’ve had a lot of work done. Got the seventh injector changed, EGR temp sensors, EGR pressure sensor changed delta P sensor changed. New DEF lines, DEF harnesses and connections changed. One thing I haven’t done personally that that I’m going to do, is check the DEF filter, because every time I asked the mechanics to change it they said all we forgot to change it. And I don’t know when’s the last time it was changed. And I’m getting a lot of DEF fault codes. Has anyone had any experience with the white smoke issue. If so let me know.

When was the DPF last serviced?
-
Like Amodelcat said, I would think checking the DPF filter would be one of the first things to check.
AModelCat Thanks this. -
Check the EGR cooler for leaks. It can cause white smoke from the exhaust if coolant is leaking internally. It can also plug the DPF quicker than usual as the coolant mixes with soot. It can also plug the EGR cooler, usually resulting in bad fuel mileage.
With that being said, I'm not a mechanic. There are a number of things that can cause the issues you describe. You'll probably want to list the codes and symptoms that the truck has in the Freightliner or mechanic section of the forums. There is also a bunch of information at Rawze.com that might be able to help you. -
The other members beat me to it, but all of what your describing are symptoms of your DPF needing to cleaned. You have to go to the TA or the Freightliner to do it. It will cost about 1500 or so, and you'll be down for 12 hours. That happened to me on a run from Ohio, to Iowa, deadhead to Wisconsin, and then I got to Gary, IN, I had no power. All the while, I was burning fuel like it was going out of style. I had limped it to TA along 80/94, I think it was Porter, IN, exit 15. If it's the wrong town, feel free to correct me. They put it on the computer and the codes showed a clogged DPF. Also, if you regen, and it won't stay in it longer than 15 to 20 min, that's another sign too. They took off the DPF, put it in that oven they use, and cooked all the trash out of it. Then they put it back on and forced a regen. I think they are supposed to get serviced every 250k miles or so. Your odometer should tell the story

Check the dozer valve too.
