so i’ve found myself in a bad situation hauling an OD load while traveling thru detroit Mi ( i requested different routing but MDOT KNOWS BEST).permit says I75 n to 96 w to 94 e back to i75,to my surprise the exit ramp to I 75 was closed and not enough shoulder to pull over.
I continued south and made my own little detour.was that the right decision?should i have stopped and seeked police help?
Course of action

Did you make it back to your permitted route safely? If yes, good.
If a little wide. 10' max. I have done the same as you. Not if I'm tall..
I would have called permit office for guidance. Some local police can give help, but most cops don't really know bridge clearance. -

Overheight no I wouldn’t have done it especially in Detroit. Over 12 wide I probably would made a call.... I know those shoulders aren’t very wide either...

I was little afraid something will happen when im off route and wanted to know whats the best way to deal with such situation -
Obstructing traffic or rolling off permit.
It is a nervous situation, I had local police help with traffic control.
Most the time if you are on route, police are very helpful. Not so much if you are off route.
Good luck.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Off route going around construction. (Route I was very familiar with.) Got a ticket and had to get a new permit before I moved.
Depends on the officer.

Less then 10’ wide? Let ‘er rip your mirrors stick out farther. Much better option then stoping on the interstate.
Michigan routed us to the 13’ wide springwell st exit 5 trips in a row when we were 15’11” wide and 100’ long. The 6th trip the exit was completely gone. Absolutely no shoulder. We couldn’t shut down 2 of the three lanes of I-75 while we set on hold waiting for a new permit. Just have to stay calm and roll with the punches.
