narrow 2 lane highway double yellow entering a blind corner two 4 wheeler s on each others bumpers start coming around me, let off the throttle and start braking thinking what morons. That instant the hood of a pete appears coming the other way. me and the pete take the shoulders gravel and rocks flying pass 3 wide threw a blind corner without a scratch. I thought for sure i was about to see someone die that day.

I think I remember that happened to me.. Might not be the craziest things that have happened to me, but def one of the scariest crazy things....
I used to do a run where I'd drive bobtail to go pickup a preloaded trailer.. I'd take the loaded trailer to the Ohio, then the next day do pickup in Michigan.. Then I would head back to Toronto with the trailer and drop it off at the place I picked it up.. Then I would bobtail back north to my yard.. So this one time I am driving back bobtailed (2 lane road in a Volvo Sleeper)... It was snowing and the roads were covered, hasn't been cleared yet.. .. I was driving slowly down the road (it was early hours of the morning probably like 4-5am maybe earlier) no speed change, no gear change and no braking... The truck decided to spin out and head right to the ditch, so I just let off the fuel completely and held on counter-steering.. I was able to keep in on the road and continue on my trip to the yard..
Definitely scare the crap out of me cause I didn't do any speed changes or brake changes and out of the blue the truck decided to take off... I didn't want to end up int he ditch that was for sure.. I am thankful it turned out how it did..
Another time I was heading back towards the 401 in London area and as I came around a corner too see a nice big snow drift off the farming feilds (it was nighttime didn't see it until it was too late).... I just said holy #### and held onto the steering wheel and hoped for the best...Turned out good but could have also turned out ugly...
Bobtailing in bad weather is scary for sure.. I have to do it more often then ever at this place I am at now.. In a day-cab with a long wheelbase... I don't like doing it cause you just never know.. Even stopping in the rain can be a challenge, I keep my distance but it doesn't help when the truck wants to slide sideways when your putting on the brakes or when someone cuts you off and you have to hit the brakes hard.. I remember one time when I had a brake down with my trailer up north (I ran over a object hidden under the snow, I had a really lower trailer and it took out my brake chamber).. My boss (who doesn't drive) tried to tell me that if they have to tow my trailer back that I would have to bobtail back home. I told him no way am I driving 2 hrs, in the worst snowstorm of the year bobtailed in a day-cab on the backroads full of farm fields... Even our mechanic who came up said "is he crazy there is no way I would let you drive back, I would bring you back in my service truck and leave the truck here".. Good news was we were able to block off that single brake and I was able to drive back with my trailer to the mechanics shop and drop it off...bzinger Thanks this.
