I finally got the "A" service for my truck that was way overdue, something like 8500 miles by the time I made it to the Ottawa yard. Good little shop there. I pulled in at noon and by 3pm my truck was in the shop and the service was done 30mins later. There are a few shops in our system that could learn a thing or two from those guys. They even talk to drivers like we are human beings as opposed to certain shops that take a slightly different approach. Yes, Wilmer/KC, I'm talking to you.
Miles have been good too. After finishing off my 2400+mi trip in Romeoville, IL I was put on a load going to Dallas for another 920mi with an anytime drop delivery. Good run except for the fact that I had to wait for a 2pm pickup just up the road and I had to wait around for 4 hours. I pulled in early in the hopes of getting started a little sooner, but it didn't work out so well and it was almost 4pm by the time I got going.
Since my day had started at 7am my 14hr clock had me shutting down much earlier than I wanted, but I was able to get close enough to TX so that I could make my delivery a day early. I made it to Dallas by 6pm and made my delivery with about 1hr of drive time left.
I had thought about holding up at a truckstop just short of my delivery and then going in the next morning as scheduled. My reason for this was to avoid a load assignment that I didn't really want. In the past, on more than one occasion when delivering to this general area in the early evening hours I have been stuck with Coke/Nestle water loads. These loads have pickup times of around 6am and are usually in the 100-200 mile range. They also tend to be live loads on both ends and effectively waste and entire day for very little compensation.
I don't always get these loads, but I knew that delivering at 6pm would definitely put me in the running for one of these pain in the butt loads. What compelled me to make the early delivery was the ever present concern about freight availability these days. An early delivery would basically guarantee a load out in the morning, whereas an A.M. delivery might find me sitting around until later that day before getting a load. There was a third option also, I could sit around for a few hours and then deliver (put in my MT call) the load. This would make it impossible to be dispatched on a 6am load because my 10hr break wouldn't be completed until after that time and I could hope for a mid morning load.
OH what to do? I decided to take a chance and deliver as soon as I arrived and all my worst fears came to be reality.
Sure enough, I got a stupid Nestle water load that picked up in Dallas at 6:30am the following morning with a 01:30 delivery in Little Rock (350mi). Not only is it a short mile day, but I will then have to sit around in Little Rock for the rest of the day and deliver the load in the middle of the night which is going to royally mess up my log for the rest of Friday.
I hate loads like this.
The only thing that makes it somewhat bearable is that I've been running good over the previous week and I only have 11hrs left on my log for the next two days anyways. I would have preferred something closer to a 500mi run so that I could make the best of my logs before putting in a reset, but I'm just going to deliver this load and then do a reset in Little Rock because I will only have a few hours left by that point.
So here I sit at Nestle water waiting to be loaded. I had a 06:30 appointment and it is now 08:30. I'm at the dock but have yet to feel the first pallet being loaded into the truck, even though two different OTR trucks have backed into and pulled out of the dock door to my right and the yard dog has just pulled another trailer out of the dock to my left. I have had some of the worst luck with live loads since leaving the house. Hours of waisted time. Not that I'm in any hurry. I can't imagine I'm going to have any trouble making my 1:30am appointment. Oh joy!Rattlebunny Thanks this. -
Hey to all..I am going to be starting with Crete on monday!..Just whanted to say hello..and ask for the most part how is it with Crete???..All that i have talked to say it is good...So do all the centry have apu????or is it justa a handfull ...
-
Welcome beerhauler, only certain centuries have the apus, mostly 2007s i think. Most older than that are being traded out though, so maybe you'll get lucky enough to get one.
BeerHauler Thanks this. -
That's one thing about the Century class trucks...even us APU'd ones. We're still light enough to haul the water and beer.
->speaking of beer, welcome to Crete Beer...
The load from Davenport to Greenfield ended up screwing me up on my 14. 4 hrs after my p/u time they finally got it loaded. But by then I was within an hour and a half of my 14 but not enough time to finish off a 10 at the customer and still make the del appt. So they had to reschedule for Thursday nite instead of Thursday morning, then enroute they beeped me telling me to get my truck and APU in for service once M/T. Which means Friday morning before the shop opens, and Friday ??? when I'm back, so looks like I have my 1st crapola week of 2010. I've been having some weird chugging issues that use to only happen above 3500 ft, but lately it's been getting lower and lower when it happens... So as long as I'm going to have a bad week, may as well get the truck right, instead of screwing up another week w/a breakdown... Just hope they can find the problem w/o it being totally broke and throwing a code.
Plus since the forum's upgrade, it stopped beeping my e-mail when a new post gets added to this thread, and w/my Blackberry, it's a pain to go in to my user settings and update stuff... Man I miss my aircard!!!Rattlebunny Thanks this. -
Was just looking at Crete's website. No wonder they are advertising so much for drivers!
KD1 Fleet: Company Driver: $.32 - $.35 per mile
National Solo: Company Driver: $.36 - $.39 per mile
Northeast Regional: Company Driver: $.39 - $.42 per mile
The Northeast Regional looks like a lot of I95 corridor - a slow aggravating slog from NC to Beantown. I know Heartland has a bit of bad rep, but they're paying a nickel to dime more per mile for the Northeast.
I hear Crete and Shaffer ads all day on SiriusXM. I was thinking their business picked up. But apparently, they are looking for fresh meat to replace the higher priced soon to be dead meat.
What an industry! -

Well, I got my Pro Star today. ET, I don't know where you heard that about idling but it is not true. These trucks have the ability to do what you are saying but it requires a software update and Crete will not authorize it. My truck is completely dead. Can't watch TV, charge my laptop or even listen to my XM. The shop says I have to drive it for 3 hours to charge up the battery.
As far as the Cascadia's are concerned, it's true. There are about 20 here in Lincoln but they are not going to be giving them out for a while yet. Apparantly there is some sort of squable with Freightliner over the warranty and Crete won't move them till that issue is solved. They may even send them back.
